In my experience, they're not all bad, but the ones that are really bad (Talking about wanting to f*** the ponies, getting real weird about them and shit) are by far and away the most vocal ones. They're the ones people see and are like "The f*** is up with them?"
Like how folks think wrestling fans are all hillbillies with missing teeth and wear shirts 4 sizes too small, because those are the more vocal crowd.
I mean, on this forum for example, I've never seen anything TOO weird. Sure, I once clicked on the MLP thread and read some...questionable stuff, but there's far worse out there.
Far. worse.

I think it's partly because a very vocal subsection of the fandom treated themselves as the most important consumers of the series - above the girls whose femininity it celebrated - and the ties with MRAs and the kind of people who need to put 'bro' in front of anything to make it seem more masculine. And..that's the thing. Nobody says grown men can't watch the show. But some of these dudes need to realize this show isn't for "Bronies." Getting shout-outs and little nods in your direction doesn't change that. The demo for MLP is the same as it's been since back in the day: little girls. From what I've seen about the show it really is about celebrating girls. It's a cool show but I understand it's not a show for or about me, but the thing is Bronies have a reputation of trying to muscle out the intended demo and really just being really entitled misogynists. I know it's #notAllBronies but there sure was enough skeevy stuff sliding by that it was a problem. It's weird because I see Sailor Moon in the exact same light. It's funny to me how MLP and Bronies used to get all that press "crushing gender norms" or whatever, but let that shit happen the other way and see how it's taken. For example, didn't Young Justice get canned because " too many" girls liked the show? ("Logic" being that girls don't buy action figures.)

MLP and it's "bronies" are much more widely known and in your face than the rest. Simple as that. Are you really trying to say that MLP is the most popular, widely known children's franchise/fandom? If so, that's really something I'd dispute. I think this has more to do with what you're choosing to notice and pay attention to. No, I'm saying that MLP is basically unavoidable on places like this forum whereas I've never seen any decent amount of Avatar, Sonic or Pokemon stuff. Just the fact FAN has already got through 108 (!) MLP threads should tell you that. Maybe those things you listed are even more prevalent than MLP, but that's definitely not my experience and especially not on this forum.

The online Pokemon community is pretty damn big, it's just not nearly as vocal. But the rule 34 still exists but that can easily be avoided.

Mostly because they renamed a lot of Pokemon rule 34 to "Porkeyman". But seriously, don't look up Gardevoir.

MLP is one of the first truly modern fandoms, with a near unprecedented level of art, music, stories, discussion, and general culture about in a short amount of time. It is for all intents and purposes, a fandom on steroids, and thus most, if not all of its aspects are amplified as a result, including the unpleasant ones. Thus every creepy aspect, overzealous reaction, each obnoxious attitude that so often lies in so many fan groups will come to the forefront with greater speed and focus than in years past. Throw in an instant gratification web culture with rapidfire hyper-reaction, hosts of gender questions/debates happening in so many fan groups, and confrontations between those skeptical about them to begin with vs. fans ready and willing to circle the wagons when they feel they are attacked and this is what one will get.
In some ways its a microcosm of various other fan/entertainment battles going on as those outside it will often naturally pre-judge them simply based on premise alone, but then also have those within the circle who will not call out fellow fans for skeazy behavior or be willing to set an example as to how to be a fan. It becomes somehow a zero sum game of empathy, with the choice of support strictly to either those negatively affected by the fandom, or those one feels are being unfairly criticized for the actions of a few.

I just hate the extreme cases of martyrdom that some vocal fans display.

I just hate the extreme cases of martyrdom that some vocal fans display. This. Hate to say it, but it was rather prevalent here for a while. The more well known members of the MLP sect of the forum would take anything as a slight on them and fall back onto the "YOU JUST HATE ALL BRONIES, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW HARD IT IS FOR US, BEING PERSECUTED!" defence way too readily.

I honestly have no problems with anyone who is a brony, but when you try and shove it down my throat because I made a joke about it than I take offense to that. No other fandom is willing to Martyr itself. You don't see Whovians getting royally annoyed about things its civil discussions and they are willing to listen to both sides and come to an agreement at least the diehard MLP fan's I have met don't want to do that if you disagree with them, honestly it was the Whovians recommendations that got me into Doctor Who and Torchwood because I asked and there was some discourse but it was civil no-one was shouting or screaming that this one is better than that one nope. Its fringe members that irk me the ones that if you don't agree with them you hate them

I have heard viewpoints in the MRA direction as mentioned above and one of the things that some people hate about the show is kinda what Pangoro said above about almost strong-arming the show and that little girls can't even have their own tv shows to watch anymore.
It is odd though I guess, from my perspective anyway. When I was a kid, I watched Sailor Moon as a little boy, but I watched a ton of shows on YTV, and Sailor Moon just happened to be one of them. Someone mentioned Tiny Toon Adventures as a comparison point, and that was a great show, but I guess that shows had a much broader audience target then My Little Pony. Same goes for a show like Duck Tales.
Just because it's a children's television show, doesn't mean it automatically has to have bad writing. Lots of children's tv shows can have good writing. I watched the documentary on Bronies (and Pegasisters) and it seemed to talk a lot about even little boys being able to relate to the show really well.
Pokemon was brought up, and yeah, I do love pokemon but I'm not into the tv show, as it's not for me. I do love the games, and I've gotten more into it in the past year and a half. I remember hearing about Gardevoir before playing through the Gen 3 games, and yeah, some people are f***ed up. It's really f***ed because Gardevoir became one of my favourite pokemon based on the whole concept behind it. Apparently Lopunny gets a lot of porn too.

honestly I don't care, if you enjoy it and keep your "deeper affection" for the show to yourself then it's all good.
Hell I can't diss as I really like "Penguins Of Madagascar" but only in the case of I'll watch the show (and the movie) everything else is just not for me.

Just want to point out before MLP, Naruto threads were the ones in that position of fast movement and high numbers and it seems like everyone had a Naruto av or sig.
2008ish I wanna say.
