I honestly think WWE killed most of their future potential to tell really good, creative stories when they began working more and more in jokes and self-referential stuff into the act.
The 80s and 90s in the WWF were eras of larger than life characters, cartoons and comic book characters come to life, often telling improbable or even thoroughly cheesy stories...however, it was almost always presented with a veneer of realism and professionalism.
Compare a typical "Event Center Report" with Mean Gene, Sean Mooney, or Lord Alfred to hype jobs you get today; make no mistake, the guys from the old days are shilling for the product and trying to get you to part with your money just as much as the new folks are, but just look at the presentation of it. They managed to come off as actual sports commentating professionals, even as they were basically carnival barking for your cash.
This meant that no matter how over-the-top the characters/stories got (well...to a degree), things were still being sold to you as legitimate and worthy of your attention, and thus worthy of you spending money on. If guys like Gene take this stuff seriously enough to dress in a sports coat and tie for his interviews with Hulk Hogan or his Event Center reels, then clearly this MUST be something worth taking seriously! Even if you knew it was fake, you still felt more compelled to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the show. ...And that's not even getting to how much more effective those short promos in front of the green screens were at selling matches than most backstage angles/in-ring promos are today.
Screw the "We all know you're aware this is fake, </wink-wink-nudge-nudge> nonsense, screw having to get your backstage presenters to say "hashtag this!" or something, and make it feel like there's a reason to give a damn and willingly suspend one's disbelief again. Otherwise, tons of people are just going to watch to have some laughs making fun of you, and they won't be interested in spending $9.99 a month to do so.

I listened to a Review-A-Wai from a couple of months ago and they reviewed Slammiversary 2005. Alex Shelley wrestled Shocker. Their match was set up because Shelley believed that his training in catch-as-catch-can, Japanese-strong style and English influence was superior to Shocker's lucha background. In short, they were feuding over who the superior wrestler was. No convoluted feud over something frivolous, it was a feud based on who did their job better. It's simple as all hell and the basis for all athletic competition the world over. Why is it that WWE is so terrified to make things that simple? because it was never the basis for any of their success? Sometimes they'd do a thing where someone was pissed about losing a match and attack someone but throught Vince's run almost none of their feuds were based off that.
