I was scanning through some old Nitros now that they are on the WWE Network and found this match, Sting vs Hogan from Nitro in 1995. Hogan comes out, in all black, to his American Made song, has no beard or mustache, and comes in from the audience with a black eye mask on. Sting is like somewhere between the blonde and brown surfer look....the whole thing is just weird. At first I thought this was early nWo Hogan but its actually before nWo. So can anyone explain what was going on with this match storyline-wise? What was with Hogan's bizarre look? This is such a weird match for the first match ever between Hogan and Sting. I always thought Starcade 97 was their first match?

That was the "Darkside of Hulkamania" angle I believe. I think Hogan was still feuding with the Dungeon of Doom and Four Horsemen, didn't trust Sting so this was born out of that. Don't remember much more about it.

And at World War 3, the red and yellow returned. Unfortunately,it wasn't enough to prevent him from being pulled under the ropes and mistakenly eliminated.

That sounds the same as his late WCW "Terry Bolea" run where he was wearing all black again...man there is so much stuff that doesn't make sense, I am glad these are all gonna be available now but its gonna take forever to watch them all in order again!

Hogan hadn't exactly turned heel yet, but it was WCW's first attempt to reinvent Hogan. He was wearing the black gear IIRC because he was feuding with the Dungeon of Doom and needed to tap into a darker side of himself. Someone will probably post that, "It's not hot! There's no Hulkamaniacs here" clip shortly which was all around the same time. Dungeon of Doom also shaved his mustache which I thought was the most heinous thing ever when it happened. As for why he is wrestling with Sting? I think it had something to do with Hogan wanting to see who his friends are and if Sting would turn his back on him rather than wrestle him fairly.

I can actually remember seeing that back in the day; I wasn't watching Nitro or Raw regularly at all, but I remember flicking past TNT and hearing "Sting vs. Hogan!" and stopping to watch.
I recall being struck by how badly the crowd was reacting to Hogan; I think some kid takes his Hogan foam hand, which was actually shaped like Hogan doing one of his signature poses, and tearing its head off.

I just always hate when legendary matchups like this are wasted on something stupid....just like the time Hogan fought Flair for the first time at a MSG house show for WWF that no one talks about. Or the Rock/Austin vs Hogan/Nash/Hall that had zero build up and was some throwaway match on Raw....Austin and Hogan actually DID square off for a few seconds, but at the time no one seemed to give a crap

New Blood Feuding Hogan was the worst Hogan ever.

There is a second segment in that graveyard with Savage there too, also wielding a sword. It was broadcast on the Saturday Night episode after this one, but has never appeared on YouTube sadly. It's just as ludicrous.

And let us not forget when Darkside Hogan told people they they knew what "a guy with a black bandana and gloves" can do...remember what trial was finishing/finishing at the time...

I love 1995 WCW, sometimes for the wrong reasons.

I love 1995 WCW, sometimes for the wrong reasons. Given how ingrained the NWO became in Nitro's branding, it is flat-out strange for me to watch a quasi-Rock 'N Wrestling Hogan taking a dirty loss to a on-the comedown, but still the goddamn man, Arn Anderson. It's like this temporal rift popped open and dumped about 3 different eras on one show. I kinda love pre-NWO Nitro.

Think Darkside Hogan might've been one of my earliest WCW memories. I was so confused.
To be fair, I was also super young.

Was is WCW's attempt to make Hogan "edgy", and get fans to stop booing him?
It also makes me laugh when everyone acts like no face got booed before Cena. OK, yes, there has never been anyone with as much full on hate for so long, but Hogan and Rock both have their fare share of hearing the boo birds.

At World War 3, didn't he trash the darkside Hogan gear along with a copy of the Wrestling Observer? It was a really strange segment.

Yeah, burnt it in a bin. While Sting and Savage looked nervously on, trying hard to keep kayfabe but also concerned at the increasing size of the flames.

Where was that "its not hot" clip originally from? I looked all over the PPVs and Nitros from that time and couldn't find it...I must see it in hi-def!
