Most expensive text book you've ever HAD to buy

Here I am at the end of my massage therapy program. I have 4 courses left; externship, orthopedic assessment, research, and a total blow off called Stress Management. Guess how much the Stress Management book is? $147 new, paperback! Yeah, right, I'm buying that. If I didn't need it to graduate, I would have dropped the course on principle. Anyways, I went chiro school for a year (which is basically med school) and I bought a biochemistry book hardcover 1000 pages for that price. I had to buy that book because the professor wrote it.

What was the most expensive textbook you were forced to buy, because you had no other option? And what was the most expensive one you got for the biggest savings? I just got that stress book for $11 new.

I had a bio book over $200 and it was a new edition, there were no used ones.

The worst I suffered however was the class with 8 books. I forget the total. But we found out as a class the school put them up without the professor's approval, he wanted us to get one, cheap ass book. We weren't aware of this until near the end of the semester. So we had all this damn books, couldn't get refunds and the school book store refused to buy them used.

So 8 books, that weren't used at all and I was stuck with them, along with 23 other students.

The whole f***ing text book scam in college is such a rip off.

I liked professors that would just send links to articles that were germaine to the course and let us either print them off or read them online and then we discuss them in class.

It was around $200 bucks for my Psychology text book.

The funny thing is, I got all my software for cheap. I needed Visual Studio and Office, and got Visual Studio for $25 and Office for $20. They both run close to $300 normally, but college students get em dirt cheap.

When I was in college there was a Psychology book that was over $200.

I learned my lesson before by going to class a few times before deciding if I actually needed it. Turns out I didn't.

Oh, and the people who did buy it couldn't get anything back for it since they were changing the format the next semester.

Most expensive text I bought was Philosophy at $159 new. This one doesn't count since I got an option to rent used, but Economics text book new is $322, $242 used. Even renting, it's $145.

I'm pretty sure I've had textbooks costing over $300 before, if not at least close to 300. Sometimes they come with online access codes to quizzes and assignments prepared by the professor which bumps the price up even more.

I had to buy...a $115 CODE.

The actual book came unbound, wrapped in cellophane, and you had to buy it new to use the Textbook Company's online resource that the teacher SWORE by.

Didn't come in on time and I lost 2 weeks of use.

I don't think I've had a book cross the $125 mark since undergrad. It's pretty surprising that all my most expensive clinical books have topped out at $110, even if they're leather bound.

I know this is biased since it's my first year and all, but $134 for a Microsoft Office book is pretty crazy.

Not the most expensive, but the worst was $99 program (It's since increased in price exponentially, cha-ching) that only existed to upload documents onto online. It was only used 3 or 4 times throughout college and nobody ever had any idea how to use it because it was poorly designed.

It was necessary only because somebody decided it was necessary.

I think it was close to $200 but that was back in 2004 so I forget. One reason I hated university, that is a bad scam. If students aren't poor enough and have to get money to do this gig. I'm almost surprised we have scientists, doctors and people who go to school for a good long time in this world with how absurdly expensive university is.

Get a trade. They had carpentry courses in my high school, and holy balls would that have been helpful with my current occupation.

When I made the brilliant decision to go to DeVry shortly after high school I had one electronics text book that was $350 but had a required tool kit that was another $450.

JuCo and the Police Academy were great though, don't think I spent over $50 on a book. They gave us a list weeks in advance so we could shop online or in the Academy's case, everything was worksheets that we just made copies (maybe $30 spent) and two law books that cost $40 each.

The ridiculously overpriced text books disgust me. Students have little money as it is, are trying to better themselves and get a degree so some publisher big-wigs decide the best thing to do is sell books for £100+

How can they justify charging that much for a book? I get that a big, thick, detailed medical book will cost more than a copy of Harry Potter but they still should cost no more than £30 tops.

I feel sorry for people who bought all my courses textbooks (there was about 8 that we were suggested to buy, each at between £50 - £100). I could only afford one. I never had to use any of the books and got a respectable 2.1 grade without them. Basically pointless in the computer age when you can find most of what you need with the touch of a button for free.
