I always hear how WWE has banned the word "wrestling"
So what exactly are they doing besides putting me to sleep /:

Fundamentally, as long as they have wrestling matches on the show and feature storylines that are resolved in said wrestling matches, they are and will continue to be a wrestling promotion, even though they try to market themselves otherwise.

They seem to have lightened up on that rule a bit in the past couple years, I've heard wrestling and wrestler said on the show. Daniel Bryan has said it a good bit.

They have actually created an environment where someone calling themselves a wrestler gets a pop.

One weird tidbit is apparently they try not to say pin or pinned, which is why they say "knocked off" and whatnot instead.

I really don't get why WWE tries to shy away from what it is. Why be a wrestling company if you won't even call your main product its proper name. You don't see football, basketball, or baseball doing that. It just furthers the reputation that WWE has of being second-class entertainment.

I absolutely despise the phrase "sports entertainment", because it doesn't even describe what the performers are doing. What sport are you using as entertainment? Basketball? Hockey? Football? Who knows, because it's just "sports". Bottom line, the name of the company is World Wrestling Entertainment. Your biggest show of the year is called WrestleMania. There's no reason not to call your product "wrestling". All your fans call it that, anyway.

It is Wrestling. That's what it's called and always will be. No one says sports entertainment unless their last name is McMahon or they're told too. It's a marketing term birthed from a carny loophole to get out of paying commission taxes.

Things like Animal constantly saying "sports entertainment/sports entertainers" during the Road Warriors' HOF induction feels so forced. The talking head interviews on documentaries from old-school guys referring to NWA or AWA or WCW or ECW as "sports entertainment" bugs the shit out of me. I don't want to hear Tully Blanchard refer to his matches with Magnum T.A. as "sports entertainment". Those companies weren't ashamed to be wrestling so don't insult them by calling their product "sports entertainment".

I don't know if WWE talent have "sports entertainment'" drilled into their heads when in training as from what I have seen of the Brodus Clay and Kaitlyn shoots, they say it constantly. I think that if Vince could trademark the word "wrestling", he would have.

To be fair, a pro wrestling promotion should not have to answer to an athletic commission considering that it is by its very nature, sports entertainment regardless of whether the term actually exists or not.

It's still wrestling. And the same distinction could have been made regardless without the rebrand. "Sports Entertainment" is a buzzword. If it was simply left as a classification, that'd be fine. But to purposely attempt to reinvent the wheel going forward with a name no one ever uses is absurd.

It's like if, I dunno, James Cameron started screaming that you are to refer to Avatar 2 (if that ever actually gets made, not that I'm hoping for it because the first is shit) as performance entertainment. Like, yeah, it kind of relates, but it's not remotely the same thing as the word it's replacing.

yes, and it always will be. do you think the other millionaires give Vince weird looks at the country club when he tries explaining to them "I'm not in the wrestling business, I'm in the entertainment business"?

No, it's an Entertainment show. Vince says it himself - he's not in the wrasslin' business, he's in the entertainment business.
All things considered, RAW is better than it has been in the past (with the exception of the post-Summerslam slump). Wrestling matters more, matches get more time, and there's less of the hosses lumbering around. I just wish NXT would get more mention outside of the week that a special card is coming.
There should be a monthly NXT showcase, not quarterly. You want fans to buy the network on the strength of NXT, give them a reason.

It's a variety show that just happens to be performed by trained pro wrestlers.
I imagine Vince would love to have Cena and Orton open every show in tuxedos, Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show style, with Xavier, Big E and Kofi as the chorus line, because Vince can't help himself.
