Watching King of the Ring 1993 right now and they just had the Luger/Tatanka match. The match ends in a draw and Luger assaults him. This is just 2 weeks from his face turn so exactly how did they explain any of this. Why did Lex suddenly have a change of heart and why were we suppose to just accept it?

That's right you just shut yo mouth and accept it cause Vince McMahon said so!
Just like the rock shook hogans hand 2 weeks after Hogan tried to murder him with a truck

He bought a bus. And some flag pants.
And both were awesome.

The only thing Luger hates more than Native Americans are Samoan guys who pretend they're Japanese.
Yes, that makes perfect sense.

Because he has a metal plate in his arm and is pretty much cheating, making him the good guy.

If I remember, it was as simple as Lex Luger explaining that he couldn't stand the things Yokozuna and Mr. Fuji were saying. Luger subscribed to the philosphy: 'America, Love it or Leave it!' I believe they showed Luger ignoring (or maybe shoving aside) Bobby Heenan on the way to the ring to slam Yokozuna. You're right that there was no build-up or hints that Luger was changing.

You forget Luger had a itch that just got bigger and bigger.
You think that Luger face turn had no build up, you didn't see his 1990 face turn.

Actually I believe it came down to Hogan taking his ball and going home and Vince needing a replacement.

It was essentially the same as the Jack Swagger face turn: he may be a bad guy, but first and foremost he's a proud American.

What more explanation is required?
I mean, c'mon...

It was essentially the same as the Jack Swagger face turn: he may be a bad guy, but first and foremost he's a proud American. At least Swagger had an American patriot gimmick, albeit a racist one. This was more like if Tyler Breeze came out and beat Rusev then waves the flag and started kissing babies.

You see, he was always proud of himself, but on that day, we learned he was also proud of his country.

One could argue that this was just a continuation of the Narcissist gimmick. Yokozuna took out Hogan. There was a gaping hole in the roster and no heroic flag-waving guys to fill it. Luger stops by Dollar General and gets him some cheesy flag shirt and pants and drops in on the U.S.S. Intrepid, drills Yokozuna with the plate in his arm and gets a nice shortcut to the top, becoming #1 contender by Summerslam.

Even Luger thought it was stupid. He had the best quote ever about it on one of the WWE Network specials. "I'd just done a house show a few days before as the Narcissist, and now all of a sudden I'm Yankee Doodle Dandy on a bus."

God - I'd forgotten how horrible that was. And its not aged well either! If ever there was a worker who looked the part, but really, REALLY did not have 'IT', that's your man right there.....

What more explanation is required? I mean, c'mon... I can never not crack a smile and shed a tear to "I'll be your hero". The summer of Lex 93 was magical... then it ended in a countout and they acted like he brought about World Peace.... What?

Another thing that would have made it better would have been if they hadn't bought Pettengill the same shirt as Luger

100% agree about not having "IT" as the top face. It just bombed, yes he was over for a short period but he was such a natural heel. As a face he was so dull and forced. I wonder if Vince had any other ideas for a Hogan replacement, he cant have just had the one option to do this angle.

Should have put the strap on that man at Summerslam. And the Lex Express should have remained as an all year thing.

I think you guys are confusing having "IT" for being able to get any gimmick over. By that logic, the Rock didn't have "IT" because Rocky Maivia was a flop. Luger was ripped out of his natural element, made to suppress his own personality, and given a generic superhero babyface gimmick that was passe before he ever started it. The fans weren't embracing the red, white and blue superheroes like they had been 5 years ago. Despite all that, Luger did the best he could (and a tremendous job IMO) of getting that character over. Did it explode like they hoped it would? Of course not, but he was still a top 5 (maybe even top 3) babyface in the company, not because of his lame character... but because he was Lex Luger.
