After an intense battle between two rivals, Shawn Michaels has Bret Hart down on the mat. And, he's putting Hart in the Sharpshooter. Well, this is interesting. The move is locked on, but Bret won't give up. Wait a minute... Earl Hebner called for the bell. What's Vince McMahon doing? What's going on!? Bret Hart has lost the match, but he didn't tap out. What the hell? Shawn Michaels is now the WWF Champ! I don't believe this! I mean...
Well, you all know how it went. The Montreal Screwjob happened, and the Attitude Era would soon be in full swing.
So, we fast forward to 1998. This year was different because there were no traditional elimination tag matches. But, there was a tournament. Some backstory:
After many months of Stone Cold Steve Austin being WWF Champion, Vince McMahon was tired of seeing this badass redneck "ruin" his company. So, at Breakdown, McMahon put Austin in a triple threat with The Undertaker and Kane. To stack the deck further, he stipulated that Kane or Taker could only win the WWF Title by pinning Austin. Sure enough, it worked. However, Kane and Taker fought each other to be the champion and ended up pinning Austin at the same time. McMahon used this to strip Austin of the title. The next night, he decided to make a match between Kane and Taker at Judgement Day for the title. And, for some reason, he decided to make Austin the special guest referee. Naturally, Austin said that he would use that chance to take out Taker and Kane and make himself the champion. McMahon said that he would fire Austin if he did. Sure enough, Austin attacked Kane and Taker during the match and made himself WWF Champion. Vince fired Austin. The next night on RAW, McMahon decided to make a tournament to determine the new champion. And, Austin showed up and kidnapped McMahon, terrorizing him throughout the night, holding him at gunpoint. However, it was a gag gun, and Austin left McMahon with soiled pants and a piece of paper, which was a contract signed by Vince's son Shane that would allow Austin to be in the tournament. Because of this, Shane was demoted to referee. So, this is where we are: a 14-man tournament to determine the WWF Title.
I'll start with the first round. Also know that Kane and the Undertaker will be in this tournament, having gotten a bye to the second round; and that Triple H wasn't able to compete in the tournament, but he was replaced by The Big Boss Man; and I didn't want to have him compete twice in case he had to face himself. So, Triple H is back in:
Round 1
Match 1
Goldust VS Ken Shamrock
Match 2
Triple H VS The Rock
Match 3
Stone Cold Steve Austin VS The Big Boss Man
Match 4
Steven Regal VS X-Pac
Match 5
Jeff Jarrett VS Al Snow
Match 6
Duane Gill VS Mankind
