I don't watch a lot of tv anymore, but I am well aware of marathons, and how they used to be mainly a holiday thing, and now, well we know what it's like now.
I don't have the WWE network, but I do check out the section for it, in case I see it changes and I might get interested.
Forget the on demand part for a minute and just look at the daily schedule...
It's their own network and everyday is filled with repeats, sometimes separated by an hour of something else.
Surely, the same person doesn't sit around an watch it 3 or 4 times, unless maybe they came in late for the first airing, but why in the hell is this so prominent in programming now?
It seems so lazy.
Nick@Nite for instance used to have a variety of shows and now they are down to 4 or 5 maybe?
What the hell?

I'm sure someone on here has a good educational essay about the current state of contracts/cost of programs from certain producers/why TV channels pay for a few and play fewer.
I mean, I'm assuming it's all on the ever dull financial concern front of the business world, but I'm hoping there's a backlog of intrigue and mystery behind it too! Murder! Sex! Drugs! Helicopters!

Some shows just draw higher ratings/are cheaper to get syndication contracts with so networks go for the profit margins there.

But why is the WWE having to do this? They actually own all this stuff and have hardly shared anything

Because if you took Law and Order or NCIS off the air, what else would fill the thousand weekly hours of programming they fill? Billy Mays rerun infomercials?

Playing the same thing over and over during the day makes sense since not as many people are home to watch TV during the day. As for at night, cheap TV trumps creativity when it comes to programming, I suppose.

It's their bread and butter
If people keep watching it, they'll keep playing it.

Every channel plays Friends lol. I was never the biggest fan of it, so that's where DVDs and having WWE Network benefit me

Plenty of other channels have original programming, yes, but look at how USA was years ago when there was more variety. I remember they used to air reruns of "Walker, Texas Ranger," "JAG," "Nash Bridges" and other shows. When it comes to syndicated reruns, I don't see anything else other than L&O or NCIS. Do they still air reruns of "House" anymore?

Do they still air reruns of "House" anymore? They also still air a lot of Modern Family, granted not as much as they used to. With some of the shows it's because they draw. Big Bang Theory is still a big draw for TBS. With others it's because the networks paid a lot for the syndication rights, and want to get their money worth. That's why USA after acquiring Modern Family had a marathon every day. They paid Big Bang Theory money for it, were expecting Big Bang Theory numbers, and when it came back that Modern Family wasn't doing great they kept airing them repeatedly. But about Law & Order, I still remember the day of the Psych series finale, and how to commemorate that, USA showed 10 hours of one of the Law & Order shows.

Do they still air reruns of "House" anymore? Or even in the 80's/90's when they had cartoons, game shows, whatever WWF programming was around, and cheap original programming for starters. My best guess is they pay a lot for these reruns and they have to fill a quota. And the audience is just there (ie Family Guy on TBS/Adult Swim).

I remember that USA had their cartoon block back in the day called "The USA Cartoon Express." I remember during the week, it sometimes went on until 6 or 7 at night. They even used to air movies on weekdays. They hardly show movies at 2 a.m. anymore.
