Yes, that show is still on the air.
TONIGHT, the show that launched the illustrious careers of comedic luminaries from Bill Murray to Tina Fey kickstarts its landmark Fortieth Season, hosted by Chris "Peter 'Starlord' Quill" Pratt, featuring Ariane Grande as the musical guest. In the coming weeks we'll have episodes hosted by former SNL castmembers Sarah Silverman (yes, she was on the show for a season) and Bill Hader (my favorite alum from the past decade). And it's been rumored that Jim Carrey will host an episode in October.
There's also some shifts in the cast lineup, with 4 of last year's featured players getting the boot (only Beck Bennett, Colin Jost, Kyle Mooney, and Sasheer Zamata are sticking around, though Mike O'Brien will return to the writers' room). In addition, Cecily Strong has left the Weekend Update desk, to be replaced by newcomer Michael Che (who happens to be the first black Update co-anchor in the show's history). And SNL also welcomes new featured player Pete Davidson, the first SNL castmember born in the 90s. Feel old, people.
I figured we needed an all purpose SNL thread to discuss not only this season, but our favorite castmembers, hosts, musical guests, bloopers, whatever, from the sketch show's history. NBC itself could help this discussion, as they'll also be airing vintage SNLs before the new episodes. Tonight is the famous Richard Pryor episode featuring the "Word Association" sketch with Chevy Chase.
I'll probably add topics of discussion sporadically, but for now I'll start us off with this: any hoped-for guests this year? I've got my fingers crossed for Robert Downey Jr. towards the end of the season. He's an SNL alum and I hear he's got a pretty big movie coming out next summer. I'm also praying we see a musical guest from the heavier side of rock, maybe someone along the lines of a Mastodon? Wishful thinking, I know.
Well, that's enough out of me for now.
