I have never heard a crowd go that ape shit for anyone, and he was still the huge heel at the time he tore his quad

He was getting popular as a heel simple as. Despite what some HHH dissenters have stated in this forum (and others) the guy was legitmately over at the time and I remember, as an early example, when the whole 'Kurt Angle loves Stephanie' storyline started in late 2000 (prior to the Austin reveal) the crowd were clearly rooting for him against Kurt.

TBF he'd sort of been going in and out of heel/tweener/face mode for a long time prior to the injury. He seemed to lack direction before pairing up with Austin. He was very much a heel before he left - nothing says heel like chair shotting a female when she's down - but I think the fans had been softened to the idea that he was someone they could like.
It doesn't explain that pop though. It's not a pop really, it's a roar. It's baffling. It's like everyone loved his cool vignettes and got a bit carried away.
He was a cool enough ASS KICKER DENIM ON TOP OF A LEATHER JACKET bad ass cool hero dude but people lost interest, his win over Jericho was dull and then Hogan raped him of his chance to shine as a top face.

I can remember seeing him pose down with Hogan at Backlash and just thinking... he's gonna attack him right? Otherwise this is just a poor recreation of the Rock/Hogan posedown without the buzz, excitement or interest.

Because he's f***ing awesome. And back then him and Rock were basically a step above everyone else.

Probably because it was in MGS, which often gets crowds that actually react to things.

The months of hype for his return. The video packages, a special wwe magazine issued just on HHH, the vengeance commercial where he never showed up, the fact that Jericho the guy who took him out was champion. Like Jesus HHH vs. Jericho should of been a blood feud with the storyline Jericho tried to end his career by giving him the walls of Jericho on the announcers table when he blew out his quad. 11 year old me was like holy shit this is lame

His return was hyped like no one else I can remember. They even had that god awful U2 song 'Beautiful Day' in a hype package. Of course people were going to be interested.
I respect HHH immensely for finishing the match and taking the Walls of Jericho with that injury and he was a big name, but let's not pretend he did not benefit from the above factors.

He was over with the crowd at the time, and also I feel like the crowd is going to cheer for anyone coming back for an injury like that regardless of who it is.

WWE crowds have liked many things I considered lame, over the years. Triple H has consistently been one of those things. And in that moment, they loved the guy.
I know I've never missed him when he was gone, and almost every time he's ever come out to the ring, I've been overwhelmed with apathy. But that's just me.

He was very popular regardless his role. The hype videos showing what kind of hell he went through to comeback. Fans had a good idea how serious he was hurt and they respected him for being the first known athlete to comeback from something like that. So it hard not to respect that when the time came to return.

It was a big pop but I don't think it's comparable to many other pops in WWE. I think this is one insanely over-hyped.

Right before they came back from commercial, Triple H got on the mic and said, "Look guys, it's gonna take about 10 years but I'm going to get Bruno to come back, I promise."

I think it was because a lot of fans were burnt out after the InVasion angle, tired of the constant face and heel turns and meaningless title changes and it seemed everything had been done to death. HHH coming back felt fresh at the time as did him being a main event face even though they did tease it in 2000 until the Austin reveal.

There's this thing NXT coming. You don't know what it is right now, but your kids and older selves are gonna love it. Time traveling HHH would rule.

He destroyed his quad and then voluntarily took the Walls of Jericho. Plus he beasted through his rehab. Dude came off as badass. People wanted to cheer for him.
