Well, a new weekly wrestling show is coming, so we might as well have a thread for it. The show has two-hour premiere on El Ray Network on Wed. October 29 at 8:00PMEST, followed by a one-hour show every Wednesday night. Here's the roster for Lucha Underground so far: Aaron Aguliera (Zodiac) Angela Fong B-Boy Big Ryck (Ezekiel Jackson) Blue Demon Jr. Catrina (Maxine) Chavo Guerrero Jr. Cisco Cortez Castro (Ricky Reyes) Drago King Cuerno Famous B Fénix
Ivelisse Johnny Mundo (John Morrison) Magnificent Martin (Martin from Tough Enough) Mil Muertes (Ricky Banderas) Pentagon Jr. Prince Puma (Ricochet) Ricky MandelSexy Star Shawn Hernandez (Hernandez) Son of Havoc (Matt from Tough Enough)
Commentators: Matt Striker Vampiro Rather than fighting over championships, this is set more like a tv show with seasons and a serialized plot: back in Mexico, five of the main cast discovered a conspiracy to destroy lucha libre entirely, but were caught and exiled to the US. El Rey is apparently very big on LU as Deadline reports that they want merchandise, licensing, monthly & quarterly special episodes, and potentially live PPVs as well. (El Hijo de Fantasma) Hopefully it'll last longer than Lucha Libre USA did.

I didn't care for this show until that video. Seems like a cool alternative, with a decent budget and interesting characters.
Heck, even Chavo and Konnan looked like total badass, and if they could bring at times other wrestlers from AAA it could be a good show.
I hope that they don't try to compete with WWE yet

This sounds and looks f***ing awsome. I had no idea about it until this thread.
I think this could really be a game changer, Professional wrestling on TV hasn't really had a huge formula overhaul since WCW Nitro came on the scene.

From the trailers alone, it definitely sets itself apart from the rest. WWE goes with the all-ages variety show/sports league presentation, while TNA just does the same but aimed at a TV-14 audience. Lucha Underground on the other hand has a fight club-type feel to it, reminds me of a modern-day ECW.

One issue I had was the heel authority figure trope. Not again.

One issue I had was the heel authority figure trope. Not again. Aye, they should just let the wrestling do the talking. None of this "respect El Jefe" nonsense.

With that and the beatdown from those three guys, now I'm thinking of that stupid storyline from the TNA Impact game. Suicide's still around, right?

I'll definitely check this out. I just hope it's not as goofy as Lucha Libre USA turned out to be. I think there's a real market for lucha libre in the US, but it needs to be done right.

I kinda hoped that with all the acting classes, acting gigs and other things he was doing that ol' Johnny Lastname would have learned how not to sound horrible on the mic but not meant to be it seems.
I do hope since this is more in a TV series format than wrestling show that it ends up on Netflix though.

Kinda like Wrestling Underground?
I had a chance to go to some tapings but it slipped my mind. This can be cool. And seems to have some pretty big backers.

I was listening to MLW Radio and it was said that El Hijo del Fantasma is working as King Cuerno here.

The show hasn't even made its debut yet, and it looks like it's already about to stir up some controversy.

I like what I see so far. Couple things:
- I don't know how I feel about Johnny Mundo acknowledging WWE exists in this universe. It was already confusing enough that Johnny Nitro decided to call himself John Morrison during his WWE stint, but now he's Johnny Mundo. If he's still the same guy from WWE why isn't he John Morrison?
- I worry that the TV production style might taint the matches, in the sense that the show's objective is to push the narrative of the series more than to put on great matches. Like cutting out of matches to show some ongoing behind the scenes drama, or heavily scripted in ring moments where the heels/faces have some kind of dialogue.
But yeah the video looked cool, I hope this is good, this could be the kick in the teeth that wrestling needs that shows what cutting edge wrestling should look like in 2014.

If he's still the same guy from WWE why isn't he John Morrison? Why isn't he John Morrison? Because WWE are assholes. But in this case I'm okay with it. Johnny Nitro/Johnny Mundo is an obvious gimmick name, so it's not like we're supposed to pretend that it's his "real" name the way we do with WWE's "name generator names".

I wonder what Chris Masters, MVP, Carlito, Hardcore Holly etc. think about this argument.
