If this has been brought up before, please direct me to the thread and I'll lock this up.
Scouring Wikipedia, just realized something. WCW was founded on October 11, 1988 when Turner purchased assets from Crockett, and officially closed up shop on March 26, 2001. That's right at 12 years, five and a half months in existence.
TNA was founded on May 10, 2002. If I'm doing my math correctly, that means it only needs to stay in business for about two or three more weeks and it will officially have lasted longer than WCW.

TNA being TNA would probably fold the day before. If they survive that long, Dixie is gonna probably have an on ring celebration boasting about the company's "achievement".

Does it count when the shows will be running through the rest of the year, but functionally the company seems to be ceasing operations tomorrow?

If their website is correct, there next event/house shows after bound for glory is the uk tour in January.

In that case, this really shouldn't count until those shows in the UK happen since the company is, for all intents and purposes, done for the year.

I don't get the WCW started in 1988 mentality. JCP/WCW had the same championships, talent and tv slots before and after Turner purchased it. Did WWE start in 1982 when Vince bought it from his father?

I'd count them as "ongoing" as long as there's first-run footage being broadcast even if they're stagnant otherwise.
We don't count the end of a taped TV show as the last day of filming, it's the date the last episode is shown on television.
Unless that is they publicly shut down before their shows in the bag are all broadcast, which would be absolutely moronic. Moronic enough that I could totally see them doing it.

Did WWE start in 1982 when Vince bought it from his father? I don't get it either, it was the same company as JCP. It's like saying Eastern Championship Wrestling and Extreme Championship Wrestling were two separate things.

By this thread's logic, ROH is older than WWE.

I thought the milestone was going to be putting on the most pointless pay-per-view in the history of professional wrestling

Jim Crockett Promotions was formed in 1931 (using the brand names of East Coast Wrestling, Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling under the umbrella of the NWA). From 1985-1987, JCP not only purchased the WWF's weekend television contract on SuperStation WTBS (including the Saturday Night 6:05 PM World Championship Wrestling timeslot), but they also purchased other NWA territories including Championship Wrestling from Georgia, St. Louis Wrestling Club, Heart of America Promotions (Central States Wrestling), Championship Wrestling from Florida and Mid-South Sports (Bill Watts' UWF). The company was sold to TBS in 1988 (renamed the Universal Wrestling Corporation for a short time until being again renamed to World Championship Wrestling Inc.). It's brand name, history and 24 wrestlers' contracts were then sold to WWFE Inc. in 2001 (while the actual company was renamed back to Universal Wrestling Corporation by AOL Time Warner for the duration of the contracts held by many WCW wrestlers who chose not to take a buyout from AOL and sign new contracts with the WWF).
Bottom line: In no way, shape or form is TNA Wrestling even remotely close to having lasted as long or longer than WCW nor will they ever be.
