Again, I saw very few movies but Guardians was the best movie I've seen since the Dark Knight. I loved every second of it. The only downside, for me, was the music. I'd have preferred a more synth based soundtrack.
It reminded me of Mass Effect so much. And any that reminds me of Liara T'Soni's blue ass is okay I'm my books.

Lego Movie, no contest. I honestly felt like a kid again.

Winter Soldier
Runners up: Guardians of the Galaxy, Days of Future Past, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and How to Train Your Dragon 2.

The last time I saw a movie in the theater was Back to the Future last year. I haven't been to the movies at all this year

I haven't seen all that many but Planet of the Apes stands out. Fantastic. Like the first one, it exceeded expectations.

I have to update to add Gone Girl. I just saw it and I really enjoyed it. It's hard to compare it to a sci-fi/action movie like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but those are probably my two favorites I saw in theaters this year, with X-Men: Days of Future Past being close behind them.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is my favourite. Real good slow building film. Not sure is it was better than Rise Of but still bloody good.

The Lego Movie. I haven't had that much fun watching a movie since I originally saw Jurassic Park.

Gone Girl, though I did see that recently so my judgement could be clouded by shock of the new. So i'll say Lego Movie.

I'm clearly in the wrong thread with the wrong audience, but Grand Budapest Hotel and Force Majeure are pretty boss.
In terms of something more along the lines of the responses I'm seeing here, Nightcrawler is going to get some markouts from the boards, I feel. Pretty darn well done it is.

Epic three-way tie between Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Fault in Our Stars. (Yes, I'm serious when I say that.)

No love for Boyhood? Well, I'll take it. Probably the best movie I've seen in the last 5 years or so. Snowpiercer, Gone Girl, Grand Budapest Hotel and Edge of Tomorrow are after that I suppose.

I wanted to see it, but it just didn't play in any of my local theaters. I was expecting it expand further than it did, though technically it did get a 'wide' release.
