This is a film that was on my must-see of 2014 list, alas, it's since been delayed until February. Still, here's a great new trailer with Colin Firth beating the shit of some young scallywags in a pub.

...alas, it's since been delayed until February. thats always a good sign. not just pushed back, but pushed back to a dead month for movies Considering how stacked next year is, getting a release date at all is at least something. That late January/February period has produced some decent success in the last few years, The Lego Movie, Non-Stop, Robocop, Chronicle, The Woman in Black and Oz to name a few so it's not the worst slot to have. And Matthew Vaughan hasn't made a bad film yet, so it's still looking good to me.

And the red band trailer has arrived, so obviously it's NSFW.

Does Sam Jackson try and sell you on a Capitol One card?

Does Sam Jackson try and sell you on a Capitol One card? Nope....and if he did, if you knew what he had planned, you wouldn't want it.

Just saw it. Highly recommend it. Really does an interesting, fresh, and entertaining take on the spy movie genre.

I'd call it Hot Fuzz with spys, taking the conventions, having fun with them, but still using them to tell a story in that genre. It's the most fun I've had in the cinema in sooooo long.

That was Kick-Ass meets Roger Moore era James Bond. Must see for anyone. Long review I just wrote: {Spoiler} Just saw Kingsman: The Secret Service.
Short review: Roger Moore era James Bond meets Kick-Ass in an orgy of violence that deftly balances wit and truly sick humor. This was the most fun I have had in a theater since Guardians of the Galaxy and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Longer review. This was a rare movie where I went in with exceedingly high expectations and they were met. I didn't know much about this movie beyond its ad campaign. My heart did sink yesterday when I found out it was based on a comic by Mark Millar. He's the type of guy who comes up with phenomenal premises, but the actual delivery is mean spirited and pessimistic enough to make goths seem like pep squaders.
Thankfully, when it comes to movies based on his work, studio meddling is a rare hero, and something truly fun often comes. This was that case.
It tells the story of a Chav who becomes a Bond-style secret agent. It is a bit manipulative in telling this story (screenwriters out there, he actually saves a f***ing cat) but never to a truly eye rolling degree.
There is also something to be said for the music, which like Kick-Ass before it using Elvis's Battle Hymn of the Republic to score a jet pack minigun massacre, perfectly exemplifies absurd escapism mankind needs to go to the movies to see.
Another thing I enjoyed was the movie taking things I normally hate in cinema, such as Waif-fu or Shaky cam, and tweaking them just enough to make them work magnificently. Now the 98 lbs woman is a Swiss army Oscar Pistorius and the cinematography keeps the speed, but doesn't cut away from the action and actually shows the choreography.
But above all, in the modern cinematic world of dark and gritty realism, this is a welcome piece of fluff that goes for broke time and again. You will cheer when Colin Firth beats the hell out of street thugs with an umbrella, you will actually give props for an original super-villain plot, and you will smile as our hero battles through what appears to be a re-purposed Austin Powers set.
Long story short, I had fun, and it was easily worth the price of admission.

Considering my anticipation for this film, for some reason I never commented on my thoughts about it when I saw it last month. I loved it, it had that great Matthew Vaughan OTT violence mixed in with a great soundtrack. Colin Firth was great fun in it. In all the uses of Freebird throughout the years, this is without a doubt my favourite use of it in a film. It's up there with the end of Kick Ass when the final part of An American Trilogy plays.

Oh and that scene where Pomp and Circumstance/Land of Hope and Glory plays, absolutely ridiculous. But great.

A tiny thing that bugged me, there is a scene where you see the date of an event engraved on something. It is given by an English organisation to an English agent, yet the date is in the MM/DD/YY format. The film makes a huge point about the organisation being quintessentially English, so there's no way they would allow a date format used outside the UK to appear on anything to do with them. And it's not to make it more accessible to a Worldwide audience as the DD/MM/YY format is used by the vast majority of countries in the World.

Just saw this with the girlfriend, wasn't paying that much attention to the movie but it was solid.
But, one thing, when Randy Savages theme started playing, HOLY SHIT. I don't remember context, but all I know is that making out while the Macho Man's theme is playing is an incredible experience. On a scale of 1-10, I was at 13. Goddamn. That's the thing I remember most about this movie.
