When Steve Austin abandoned his 'Ringmaster' moniker, he adopted the traits of Mickey Knox; he was Stone Cold, and he ruthlessly jumped and ambushed Bret Hart and the rest of The Hart Foundation at any place, any time. When did Austin's character 'evolve' to become like The Sandman - namely, guzzling beer? Has Austin acknowledged that his character took after The Sandman's?

First time I remember him guzzling beer and driving a truck was at In Your House Degeneration X in December 97. Felt like then he turned from a Stone Cold Killer to a Redneck.

I don't recall him drinking beer on camera until 1998 to show how he was the opposite of what McMahon wanted.
Prior to this he was all about antagonising the Hart Foundation.

I mean, I only started watching in like 2006 but I know my history. Can someone fill me in on Stone Cold advocating for the overthrow of the bourgeois?
But seriously, the only differences between Austin and Sandman were that they both liked beer, brawls, and occasionally hair bleach. SCSA was originally supposed to be an outstanding wrestler fed up with being overlooked by both the fans and the front office, who turned into the prototypical alpha male of the late 90's after gaining support from the fans. Sandman was a drunk who could take punishment like no other because he was so constantly inebriated he numbed his nerve endings.

The original reason for Austin opposing McMahon was after Summerslam 97, when Austin was injured from the Owen Hart piledriver. Austin did some live via satellite interviews where he said he still wanted to compete, and that him being forced to the sidelines was quite a toll on his earnings (especially since he was both a Tag Team and Intercontinental champion at the time). This would result in WWF officials like Jim Ross and Sgt. Slaughter taking Stunners. This would lead up to the Madison Square Garden Raw where Vince insisted that they were sidelining him for his own safety, and Austin would give Vince the first of many Stunners. There was another segment in December where Austin refused to defend the IC championship against The Rock after having beat him the night before at In Your House: DX. McMahon gave Austin the ultimatum of defending the title or forfeiting to The Rock. Austin would forfeit, but he would have the last laugh in Stunning the Rock, and then he would run the ropes while McMahon was on the apron with his back turned, causing him to fall outside the ring. That's really the beginning of the Austin vs. McMahon feud.

I don't know if he did. He drank beer but that's a fairly generic trait. He was a redneck, working class, man of the people. His gimmick was hardly going to be to carry around a bottle of beaujolais and a spittoon.

Austin was obviously a direct copy of King Kong Bundy and Sandman. Anyone who can't see that is a Russo.

I'm pretty sure I remember either Heyman or Austin himself admitting that he did copy the Sandman, as well as take his finish from Whipwreck. Damned if I remember where, though.

I don't think Austin likes the statement that he copied the Sandman. As was pointed out in this thread, the beer drinking was really the only common link between the two. Austin was an elite athlete who liked to brawl after his neck injury necessitated it; Sandman was a schlub off the street in zubaz who drank and smoked in his entrance and hit people with a cane.

You heard it here first folks. The Sandman invented drinking beer. It's not just a matter of Stone Cold drinking beer now and then; Austin made beer guzzling a part of his gimmick. To pretend that Austin did not make beer guzzling a part of his gimmick (on grounds that drinking beer is such a generic act) is like saying that Mr. Kennedy did not make talking loud a part of his gimmick.

Austin has no problem admitting that Sandman did the beer routine first. Austin didn't bang beer cans onto his head. He went for the big visual of banging beer cans and dumping beer on himself, holding the can high above him to create a big visual.

Theyre not in the same universe, let alone the same league The WWE Universe is a universe, and they've both been in at least one WrestleMania match... does that count? Plus they were both in ECW.

Austin's just really a hardworking redneck who loves driving things, kicking ass, drinking beer and cursing. That's exactly who Austin really is in real life.

Austin has said that Sandman and Mikey influenced his gimmick and finish.
I'm not sure why people are being assholes about it.
