Man, like, do you even need to debate expectations of privacy, whether something is privacy, the role of an entertainer in our society or any of that? This dude isn't a cop or some public figure it does the public good to keep tabs on. He's an entertainer. If he asks you to turn off the camera and you don't do it, you're an ass. Were it my club, I'd ban him.

Yeah, just to all the people who were replying to me on earlier stuff, that you kind of 2 days late on this. I would apologize. Or be contrite. Then I look at my username. I realize I am... CRACK-A-LACKIN'! Though to be less serious, I get the sentiment of "Um, stop whining entertainers and entertain us!" I also get that I am a private citizen, so I can't relate to being pissed that I was being recorded. But Mikey, babydoll, how can I make this better? Don't give up on us. We can turn it around. I will adopt a horrible catchphrase to be roundly ignored and mocked by others. My shame-endectomy in '88 means that is easy for me. Hell on my roommates. Especially when I do my 'pervy Winston Churchill' voice. What I am saying, is you can be big spoon.

I was at a She & Him show a couple of years ago and Zooey Deschanel asked for everybody to put their phones away. Security even went through the crowd to see if people were recording.
I was kinda perplexed at first and thought it was unnecessary, but the more I thought about it, the more I took no issue with it. The artist has agreed to perform and wants to perform in the conditions they are comfortable in and that could mean they don't wish to be recorded.
At a Neutral Milk Hotel show this summer, Jeff Mangum asked for the same.
As for comedians, I think it's even more necessary for people to show respect and put their recording devices away. Firstly, the last thing a comedian, whether he's world famous like Chris Rock or a guy just at an open mic, needs is for somebody to lift their shit. Putting in on YouTube will allow any old hack to steal material that isn't theirs before it becomes widely known.
Secondly, if Chris Rock is working on new material, he's going to want to work out the kinks. He deserves the chance to and he doesn't need people recording it.
At the end of the day, it comes down to respecting a performer's wishes. If you can't do that as a member of the audience, stay at home.

I will never understand this obsession with recording and taking photos of every single thing. I've been to concerts and live events where people film the entire thing through a phone. I may take a couple of photos but I'd always rather watch the thing than relive it through a video www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HbYScltf1c
