Before Russo came in, TNA's biggest problem was creating strong heels and constantly trying to attack WWE. I felt I was a bit critical of TNA back then because of that, as it was just stuff I hated. But, other then that, it wasn't that crippling.
They have had problems in the past in that company with pulling the trigger on certain people at the right time and some iffy creative. Jarrett doing a superman comeback over Raven and a bunch of people in 2003 was pretty rough, especially considering they drew pretty well during that Raven/Jarrett feud. Then you have issues with Monty Brown and not pulling the trigger on him. But you could say, well, TNA only made these mistakes, it's not that big in the long term, as long as they learn from them and get better over time.
Then the shit hit the fan when Russo came in.
To be honest, I was ok with Kurt Angle going over Samoa Joe, though I guess I would have preferred them wait for the Joe vs Angle match till maybe Bound for Glory 2007, or even Slammiversary or Lockdown. That way, you can actually have Joe go over Angle because Angle wouldn't have just came in at that point. I think because he just came in, he had to go over and make a huge impact, no pun intended.
Then you started getting bad storyline, with Angle attacking Joe's girlfriend, and instead of building to the more obvious revenge angle of, Kurt Angle ended up unbeaten streak, and now I must beat him.

Joe losing to Angle was the moment for me that it all started going sour. After that I kinda lost interest really, I still watched sparingly but I don't think I ever saw the company as hot as that again.

I blame taking the World Title off Raven a few weeks before debuting on Spike. I never got to see Raven as a World Champ. If they'd have at least given me that for a week I wouldn't have had to hit "the button" and they'd be bigger than WWE.

Even at its peak, TNA barely qualified as a national product. I don't think what they were doing has ever translated to that huge audience the way WWE's did, it's always been a bit too niche.
I mean their biggest buyrate of all time was a home grown talent against a WWE-made star in a match that barely qualified as being called 'pro wrestling.' That's one of the only times they've ever shown a hint of expansion and it required booking one of the most unique matches in wrestling history to achieve that, while piggy backing on a name made elsewhere.

When TNA started making all the same mistakes WCW made - that's where it fell down.

Even Christian to some extent robbed the home grown to be the heroes. He was the one that defeated JJ to become the Top babyface when it should have been guys like AJ or Joe.
If it were me, I would have had Christian, Sting and JJ put over AJ, Daniels and Joe at BFG with Joe becoming champ. Then you build Joe-Angle for BFG 2007. Pretty simple, really.
