In the spirit of Halloween! As goofy as they often are, I have a soft for for them. So sufficed to say, I loved the old FMW tapes with guys like Super Leather or Jason the Terrible. And I wonder if Mark Calloway cringes any time he remembers his first note able feud being with Nigtmare Freddy.

A guilty pleasure for me too. In a way, they make amazing gimmicks, especially in the context of nineties wrestling. But even in a landscape that included evil clowns and voodoo witch doctors they were beyond cheesy. I guess the Deathmatch promotions were their natural home really as they were able to indulge in levels of violence that horror movies provide. Did anyone ever do a rip off Michael Myers? Halloween Michael vs Nightmare Freddy would equal money every day of the week.

Eddie Gilbert was Michael in W*ING, alongside his brother Doug, who was doing the Freddy gimmick (Doug wasn't the original Memphis Freddy, his father Tommy was). They did an infamous shoot promo where they quit in the ring and removed their masks.

There was a Chucky mini in one of the lucha promotions, yes. He accompanied Monser.
Been tons of monsters, really. One of the first was Dr. Frank in Memphis (Lawler brought in the Frankenstein Monster to help him). After that we had another Monster show up in 70s Los Angeles. Tons of mummies, from Prince Kharis in Smokey Mountain to the Mummy (Bobby Duncum Sr.) in Southwest. Gangrel the vampire, originally Vampire Warrior. Memphis, after the success of Nightmare Freddy, introduced a Jason (no connection to Jason the Terrible, a similar gimmick that got started in Stampede), a zombie, the Wolfman, and a few others.
One of the lucha (I think it was a lucha promotion) even had an Invisible Man gimmick. Molly Holly briefly had a Scream "Ghostface" gimmick in WCW.

Maybe I'm just too used to North American booking, but I honestly can't think of a good reason why W*NG or FMW never put Leatherface, Jason, Freddy, and Michael into a stable together. Heck, hire the Mexican Chucky and put him in it too! And why there has never been a Pinhead gimmick in Japan is also beyond me.

Leatherface in Memphis was something to behold. People in the audience felt Jerry Lawler was about to be murdered.

Leatherface in Memphis was something to behold. People in the audience felt Jerry Lawler was about to be murdered. Normally I am not judgmental enough to buy into the stereotype of southerners as hicks-but when I see the audience in some of those old Memphis shows, I can just hear the banjo music.

Rick Steiner being harassed from Chucky from Child's Play deserves an honourable mention.

Not a movie, but a series, but I guess a modern equivalent is Samuel Shaw's blatant Dexter gimmick with some Norman Bates thrown in for good measure.

This is also the appropriate thread to restate mi old idea about Shelton Benjamin having a Norman Bates gimmick. Remember Mama Benjamin? The gimmick would involve Shelton getting the news that she had passed away and breaking down. Then he would start doing random run ins wearing a dress and glasses and acting psycho. But later on he'd be wearing his regular ring gear and insist he had no idea what everyone was talking about. There would even be backstage skits of someone listening behind a closed door, and inside we would hear Mama Benjamin's voice screing at her son: " Who was that hussy I saw ya talkin to last week?" "No one momma, I swear!" "Don't be telling me no lies boy!"
Hey, I think I it would have been funny.
