I watched this film for the first time at a screening for my film and media course at university and I have to say it's a cracker of a film. It was a bit slow at the start but everything from the moment John Hurt goes down into the cave was top notch material.
What's everyone else's thoughts on this film? Having now seen it I can appreciate what it did for the sci-fi genre and even the horror genre to an extent. Also Sigourney Weaver killed it as Ripley, and the James Bond fan in me loved seeing Yaphet Kotto kicking ass around the place.

I absolutely love it. I prefer the sequel, Aliens, but they're two very different films with totally different moods. I watch this every year in October. Can't go wrong.

I honestly struggled to get into it when I was younger, as you said it starts really slow and the action takes a while to come. But once I watched it all the way through I loved it and it's a great horror I can't speak highly enough of
I'd also say it's Ridley Scott's best as well

I don't know if that's a reference or not, so I'm just going to smile politely and nod my head in faux agreement. *cheesy thumbs up*

It's very well done. They did a great job of making a female protagonist, who wasn't screaming every 5 minutes.
I've always preferred the origial to Aliens, simply because adding multiple aliens meant you either had to dumb down the monster or have a higher body count. Cameron decided to do both, but he did it very well, and made completely different movie overall. Still, making the original alien almost outright invincible made it seem like more of a threat.
I always kind of wanted an alternative ending where they cut to Jonesy's stomach splitting open and a cat alien jumping out.

One of my favorites. And for some reason I love that it more or less resulted from a failed effort to make Dune.

I watched it once when I was younger and didn't care for it. My wife bought Alien instead of Aliens for me for our first Christmas. I had to hide my disappointment until I sat down and watched it. I really appreciate it now. It's much better film than what I remember.

I do prefer Aliens, but I do love Alien. It's a great mix of sci-fi and horror.

If it qualifies as a true horror film then it's probably my favorite. Aliens has totally different goals in mind, but it's equally as good.

Classic horror movie, to me one of the best. My older sister worked at a video store when it got released on VHS so she brought it home first day. Might have been 9 or 10 at the time.
Scared the living shit outta me. Was the film that started my horror kick which I'm still on to this day.

I still can't believe that it came out in 1979. The movie is quite ahead of its time. I need to give it another watch some time this weekend.
