According to various reports, the Big Guy is close to returning and could be back sooner than later.
With Randy Orton's imminent face turn, the heel side of the ledger could desperately use some star power. Slotting in Ryback as an upper-midcard heel (perhaps affiliated with the Authority) could be beneficial in the short term and would make perfect sense.
That said, the last we saw of Ryback, he was getting a monster face reaction in his hometown. His current meathead douchebag gimmick is really funny and I can easily see him taking off as face with it.
What would you do? Pragmatically, returning as a heel makes the most sense, but Ryback with the Big Guy gimmick as a face could be amazing.

Heel World Title contender with Curtis Axel as his jobber lackey.

I want face Ryback, but with him still being The Big Guy. Him being able to get his Twitter persona on Television would be awesome.

I would like to see him against Rusev, they're running out of contenders for him.

The bully meathead gimmick, along with his twitter persona, is really good material for a heel. However, it really wasn't featured on air enough and I think fans would eventually start cheering for him. This is a good chance to have him return as a face to challenge a heel, maybe during a beatdown, with "Feed me More" and try to reclaim another big face.

I think it would be better to push him as a heel. It might be hard for Ryback to reclaim his former glory as a big face when he would have Cena, Ambrose, Orton once he turns, Reigns once he returns, and Bryan when he eventually returns to compete with, and there aren't enough quality heels for each of them to work an "high level" program with without someone having to slum it with someone like Bo or Slater Gator. If Someone like Ambrose gets deemphasized to accomodate Ryback, it might lead to a backlash.

The anti-Lesnar. He's HUNGRY to work. He wants to be on EVERY show, and it doesn't matter who he has to RULE to do it. CRUSH Slater on Superstars? Sure! Destroy some dude on NXT? He's there! Beg Zack Ryder to bring back True Long Island Story just so he can take on Big E? Damn straight! Ryback vs Tyson Kid on a special episode of Total Divas? Set your DVRs.
And after every victory, he does the "Lesnar thanking Taker" thing.

I want him to be the one that beats Rusev, for America. Despite my issues with American patriotism in WWE, I'd get Ryback back to where he should be.

Ryback (and Big E) have a lot of charisma, it seems natural, so let THAT come out. Maybe then they can build some of those organic stars all the kids are talking about.

So many possibilitys.
As a heel:
Have him squash Dolph for the IC title Have him join the Authority Have him stalk Brie Bella
As a face:
Have him destroy Rusev and team up with Show and Mark Henry Have him take out The Miz Have him in the final four of the Royal Rumble, with him winning the IC title shortly after and going into Wrestlemania as champion.

Normally I like my wrestlers to be serious more than jokey but Ryback needs to run with his witty persona that he uses in his videos. Continue to refer to himself as the 'Big guy'. I love that! He is naturally funny and he's interesting when he's himself. Also don't push him too hard. He is not Goldberg.
If they ever wanted to build the prestige *sigh* of the IC title then he could be used as an important part of that.

Have him off tv until the Rumble. Give him a good dominant showing like Diesel in 94 but don't have him win. Then just start let him destroying people again, but this time as he's rising up the card let him show more personality. Then don't let Rock vs Cena 3 derail his push.

Reading this thread it saddens me how much they've dropped the ball with Ryback.
I can forgive WWE for not giving him the title belt in the feud with Punk. But turning him from a near unstoppable badass into a chump who quit because Miz kicked him in the leg is pathetic and whoever came up with that brainwave should be fired.

give him a clark kent style alter ego, called Ryfront. He talks with a lisp, and can't pronounce his r's, and by day is a lingerie sales man.
Think abyss/joseph parks, but with the Vince Mcmahon twist and seal of approval.

Depending on how long it's actually supposed to be until he returns - I'd continue teasing the Orton/Authority split and Orton face turn. Orton is told to show up in the ring and ready to fight on Raw one night, as Ryback's music hits to reveal his opponent. Ryback can have a near-squash against Orton, showing his personality through a bit without acting overly heel or face and use that match to gauge his reaction and where to go with him. If he gets a good face reaction, start building him up as such and vice versa if he gets more of a heel reaction.
That said, if Ryback returns as a face I'd bring Reigns back as a heel when he's able to return. I know they want him to be the next Cena and whatnot but hell, Cena started off as a heel.

Have him beat Rusev. Clean and simple Rusev looks like he has potential. They just need to rid him of the stupid gimmick. It would be a shame however after building him up so strongly to just feed him to Ryback.

Mark Henry and The Big Show are beating up poor Bo Dallas for very little reason. Ryback comes to Bo's rescue single-handedly despatching the two giants because he hates bullies.
That would make him one of the top faces on the roster to me although I guess he'd be actually be a heel.
