Just a disclaimer.
I am a very big fan of Ambrose and was really looking forward to him coming into the WWE. Liked his stuff with the Shield and all of that stuff and watched a lot of his matches and promos on youtube before he was ever signed.
Dean Ambrose sucks right now. I really dig the character and the man himself. But the things that are happening right now are really crap. Hot dog stands and slime in the face. Mannequins and props. I watched these things and genuinely didn't think this was funny or cool or bad ass but just thought it was pretty dumb.
Most people will say "it's because he's so crazy", "he's so unpredictable", "he's so unhinged" that anything could happen. But I feel that, that is a copout. "He can do anything he wants because he's so craaaaaazy."
Just because his gimmick is crazy/unpredicatble, doesn't mean it works.
I really enjoy everything Dean Ambrose does once he is in the ring, but it feels like the Jon Moxley character that was a real lunatic is under there waiting to burst out. For now though, it just feels really bleh. I understand he can't do the same things or cut the same promos but you can already feel the WWE-ification.
That's all obvious but when people defend it by saying "it's because he's unpredictable", that doesn't really work. Just seems like a copout for when his segments don't get over well with the crowd.

It's all subject to personal taste. My answer to the question is I'd say it's not a copout, and that term doesn't seem to really apply. I think it'd make more sense to say you don't like the way his character is currently done, or that him being crazy explaining his current erratic comedy behavior doesn't work for you. But I don't see a context where it being called a copout makes sense, because, well... in what context is it a copout? If this is a copout, what do we call all the other random characterization in WWE?
I'll say for me, Dean's character is at it's best right now, and the comedy stuff is largely working very well for me too. Makes him more entertaining and a more rounded character to me, where as I found his rambling promos a bit less than perfect most times before. Now he's having shorter promos that work better and doing nutty stuff where he seems to be amusing himself, I like it better than his more serious approuch. Plus he still has that no nonsense quality to him as well, like when he told Cena he shouldn't give him a reason not to like him, etc.
And I'd say he's more over than ever too. But it's still a fresh new push. Overall, I dig it, and I think Lunatic Fringe is just a nickname. His character being a bit eccentric, I think that's being written very well by WWE standards.

I liked the hot dog cart (and loved the holstered mustard and ketchup), didn't mind the slime despite the silliness, but I hated the mannequin. I found the promo itself to be fine but the use of the mannequin took it from insane and kinda cool to over the top stupid.

I did say that when he's in the ring he is great and he is awesome. He is a maniac in the ring. My only problem is the segments. Him shilling Kane's DVD, and him just beating up a mannequin to silence were really...eh. Like cringe stuff. Not his fault obviously.
To me, he doesn't need props. He doesn't need hot dog carts. He just needs to be a time bomb.
Again I'm not trying to compare him to Pillman or 1997 Austin or Piper but i's very hard not to. He doesn't need shilling segments or hot dog carts or mannequins. I know they can't go beserk with the language but it's not all about that. He can do very simple things.
Open RAW with Ambrose just sitting in the ring or pacing in the ring. Open RAW with Dean Ambrose controlling the camera that he's stolen from a camera man. So many things you can do without having to be so...lame.
I dunno.
I really like this guy and this character but I already see him going down that road that every main event guy goes down.

I'm not particularly a Tom Cochrane fan by any stretch, but Lunatic Fringe is a pretty good song. Maybe the Good Times Bad Times knock-off at the beginning is a bit of a copout but overall I think it's very listenable.

Great song, which always reminds me of the very underrated 80s movie Vision Quest. Terrible, horrible, idiotic nickname though.

Now I'm imagining WWE buying out TNA just so they can ruin Ambrose by giving him Serg's horrible knock-off of it that Kurt Angle used.

The mannequin was the only terrible thing Ambrose has done so far. Everything else has been good to great. It just needs a balance. The last 4 weeks it's been comedy he needs to go back to what he was doing before the concrete thing. What he was doing when he first returned, popping out of the things was the best. Just tone it down going forward.

Plus he still has that no nonsense quality to him as well, like when he told Cena he shouldn't give him a reason not to like him, etc. So what if Cena DOES give him a reason to not like him? Will Dean toilet paper his house, or put a flaming bag of dog crap on his step, or construct a zany Wile-E-Coyote-style trap? Because right now it seems like he's less likely to break Cena's nose and more likely to just bring out a funny gadget that he ordered from Acme. Open RAW with Ambrose just sitting in the ring or pacing in the ring. Open RAW with Dean Ambrose controlling the camera that he's stolen from a camera man. So many things you can do without having to be so...lame. That's the kind of stuff I want to see. Disruptive and spontaneous and weird. Dean is one of the few guys that could pull off that "Loose Cannon" style character and bring his own voice to it.

The thing is, I'm not even sure he's trying to be funny... It's just the three-man "live studio audience" on commentary that seems to laugh at EVERYTHING these days that make it seem that way... Even actual serious matches, like the NXT tag match that was on RAW a couple of months back. Put these guys back in time, and they'd probably be laughing over the top of Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior promos too.
To me, it's like Roddy Piper spraying Morton Downey Jr in the face with a fire extinguisher or Steve Austin making Vince McMahon piss himself by putting a toy gun to his head... Yeah, they're comedic acts, but that doesn't automatically make the people doing those acts into comedy wrestlers.

Instead of a mannequin he should have had an actual person there. Zack Ryder for example and just slowly tortured him.

This is how it's going to go for faces. Nothing will be subtle and everything becomes so forced it becomes awkward. Fortunately for Dean he makes it work once the commentators shut up and he starts talking.

He's going to end up like Mr.Kennedy if they're not careful.

I liked everything but the mannequin segment. Him eating popcorn while watching See No Evil 2 intensively was so goofy it's impossible not to smirk. His comedy segments are starting to remind me of Austins comedy segments during 2001-2003

He's going to end up like Mr.Kennedy if they're not careful. If Ambrose starts coming out to the heel version of Turn Up The Trouble then it'll fix his issue with having a craptacular theme at least. I can hear it now... LUNATIC FRINGE- LUNATIIIIICNote: I am a Kennedy/Anderson fan to this day, everyone may mock me.
