You never know what was going to click with people; you needed to see who could carry the ball and become future stars. Was there really any expectation that any of them would become future stars though? McMahon wasn't really blowing on his fist for good fortune before releasing the Virgil dice, was he?

No, but beating Virgil on Wrestling Challenge was a bigger deal than beating Brian Costello on the same program.

I dont see the big deal. Hogan defended the title on tv against lower mid-carders (Nikolai Voloff, Hercules, Sika, Orton (on his way out), Bundy (ditto), Honky Tonk Man). If the issue was the champion appearing on tv, the NWA/WCW champions appeared on tv on a regular basis, and this was pre-MNW. Guys like Flair, Sting, Luger, Simmons, Vader and the like all had tv matches, some against complete jobbers (bret never wrestled a total jobber, heck, i dont think he even had any squash matches even after he lost the belt for the first time).

Nice call there. I've seen Ric Flair dominate a guy like Rocky King, but I've also seen him struggle to a time-limit draw against Jay Youngblood (one of the best TV matches of the time).
