As far as I know it's North and South America.

Was it ever explained or given an definition? Intercontinental is a word. It means between or among continents; involving two or more continents: As for the title. The legend, is that it was a combination of the North and South American titles to create the Intercontinental.

I assume the name was in response to the NWA's United States title which was introduced a few years earlier. The Intercontinental title is 'better' because it represents both North and South America and the first champion was crowned after winning that fake tournament in Rio.

They're going to release that tournament on the network one of these days. You just watch.

North and South America, though they should have just gone ahead and made it for Antarctica too.

Yeah, I think it was intended to just be North and South America, then the 1998-2011 versions of the Intercontinental belt had all of the continents displayed on the plates, then the name kinda lost its original meaning.

With titles like the Intercontinental and the European championships, they should have made some vignettes with whoever was the champion, going around to the areas that were included in said championships, possibly defending and dining in area restaurants after their matches.
I can imagine if Jericho had done that back in the day and was shown being thrown out of an eatery where his title wasn't recognized, or something along those lines

The Intercontinental Championship was created when WWF North American Champion Pat Patterson unified his belt with a fictional South American Championship.
I do remember when D'Lo Brown was European Champion. That was a fun reign.

I liked how they didn't again make mention of the continents they meant so you could surmise and guess Australasia and Africa

Including dressing as greaser when representing Greece.

Seriously? It's covered in full, on the 3 disc DVD set that WWE put out several years ago called "Rio De Janeiro: City of Tournaments". You've seen it, right?

I'd love for a deluded, power-hungry heel to win the IC title and declare himself Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire in America a la Idi Amin.

What about TV Champion? Champion of your television set and all television sets everywhere. Once upon a time, major titles were rarely defended on television. The TV title was created to give a little boost to both the TV shows (which were used primarily as a tool to sell tickets to live events), and the career of a midcarder, by giving him the esteem of a title, as well as a built-in reason to feud with someone. Generally, the title was defended on TV, with a fairly short time limit, which operated as an excellent plot device for a heel champ, who didn't have to win the match to keep the title, he just had to avoid losing for 10-15 minutes. Eventually, it just morphed into another mid-card title, and its original concept, and the meaning of its name just became sort of lost.
