I like Reigns. I think he does have a lot of potential within a year or two to be a big name, though more in a Batista-ish sort of way where he's very prominent and heavily featured but not really ever a mainstream star or particularly known to people outside of wrestling, his main upside over that being that he's younger and hopefully healthier. I just don't think he's ready for a main event spot just yet - probably more around SummerSlam than around Mania.
But I just find myself asking a lot lately... What exactly is it that qualifies Reigns, right now at this specific point in time, to take Cena's spot as the absolute top guy, carrying business and having everything centered around him for years to come? I know by all accounts WWE's been grooming him for a long time for the position but... I dunno, can anyone identify any actual reasons why? Because even as a fan, the best I've really got is, "Young, strong, pretty, and related to The Rock."

He draws a reaction. I think AWAY from the Shield it was starting to wane a bit, but now it will probably pick up being out for a bit.
Honestly he's good at big spots and that's about all I can come up with. Two things that ARE very important.
But I can list more as to why I don't think he deserves it.

He has charisma and the look.
Whether that means he can be The Guy or not with the proper booking/backing, we'll see.
What qualified Daniel Bryan? I think the Yes! chant had more to do with it than "great worker" as far as him getting over as much as he did ... and booking played a huge role in it too (garnering sympathy by belittling him and holding him back). But he's nothing special on the mic and while charisma is one of those things people can disagree about, to me at least Reigns has more "it factor" than Bryan did.

Because he's popular.
If people are gonna use that reasoning for Bryan then Reigns deserves the same treatment. Only in this case he seems to fit the "mold"

He'd look damn good on a poster or on the side of a bus, for starters.

Well he has a cool factor if you're not like me and aren't still reeling from that time he said "believe THAT" with a child like giddiness that one time. I think they'd have something with him if they wanted to have a Goldberg mystique about him, don't let him talk much, keep his matches short, but test him at PPVs. The problem is when WWE wants you to be a top guy you have to have it all, long winded promos, longer matches, but with him the more we know and see about him I think the less people are gonna want him. At least for the start.

I really like Reigns, there is a lot of potential there and I can definitely see an "X factor" in him.
But I saw the video of him at the WWE 2K15 panel at Summerslam. If he is to be the next face of the company he has got to develop a personality and quick!
His quiet, cool and laid back persona, could come across as rude, uninterested and arrogant to some when he is representing the company outside the ring.

I see a lot of things that are decent about him, but overall I think he's boring. That's such an aboslute term, but I very rarely find him exciting or interesting. He's not enough of a destroyer badass to be a Goldberg-type wrecking machine. He's not good at having long, WWE-style singles matches. He can't really cut a promo with any sort of energy, it has to be this brooding, gruff one liner thing.
He's lacking in substance. People thought David f***ing Otunga was going to be something, becuase he and WWE told us how charismatic he was. But there was no substance, so he's a lawyer again now. Reigns has the surface level stuff, but he needs to actually have the goods to back it up or the fans aren't going to have it.

- Charisma - Intensity - Look
That's basically it. Oh, he's related to the Rock and he's part of a prestigious wrestling family. That in itself gives him the golden key. Now if Reigns gets better in the ring and on the mic? He'll be great. I also think in the WWE's eyes he's similar to the Rock with his natural charisma and look, same with intensity. All Reigns has to do is improve his mic work and ring work. I say all but those are big things. Shit needs to be a blessing to him and honestly, I don't know.
Who in the current crop has the ring skills, mic work, look and charisma?
That guy should be the guy but we know how the company is.

Because in 2016 Tarzan will be the biggest film of the summer and WWE wants to be trendsetters way ahead of the times!!!

Because he's related to The Rock and is buddies with the right people. I like Roman Reigns, but he's not that good... at least not yet. One could argue that if he doesn't win it against Lesnar, he might miss the chance to win the title ever, but I think he can wait and will win it eventually. Personally, if I was in that situation, I'd rather win the fans' respect first before the title. The most popular of champions earn the title after rising up and working towards that goal. Roman Reigns the character and Roman Reigns the guy haven't done that yet. For his sake, I'd pass on winning the title at WM XXXI.

He can uh, look good uh, and uh has presence babygirl. Believe dat, uh.
But yeah, beyond his looks and presence, nothing. I think he has potential, but he just screams "tag team" for now until he improves. Form a three man babyface stable with The Usos or something.

Nothing IMO qualifies him right now. Everything is potential, which he oozes. He looks the part and he certainly gets a strong reaction.
The one area he really needs to work on right now is personality. He's not shown much of it yet and his mic work is iffy at the moment. That said, Rock sucked on the mic when he first debuted, so it remains to be seen what becomes of Roman. I want to see him out of the Shield's shadow and make his own mark. He's not had that opportunity yet.

I think that Reigns has a lot of potential. Certainly a lot more potential than a lot of guys on the roster. I see Reigns as a work in progress...something that WWE can mold to fit their needs (much like they did with Cena)
As far as why? Well, he has a great look (good looking and nicely built) which is extremely marketable. I think he has potential to appeal not only to kids as kind of a larger than life hero, to men as a badass powerhouse and to women as, well, a smooth good looking dude. Which then translates into mainstream appeal. He has potential to be a good worker, youth is on his side, and I think most importantly drive and determination. Of course that is speculation on my part, and just based on some of the things he has said during interviews and also things others have said.
Do I think that he needs some work? Absolutely. Do I think they need to slow the push down a bit, so that it seems a bit more natural and less "We're strapping a rocket to this guy's ass...."? Absolutely. But I don't begrudge them for WANTING to build a new guy, or for Reigns being that guy. Its a step they have to take, and by all accounts they've been reluctant to do in the past.

I'll honestly be curious to see what sort of reactions he gets when he gets back. I'm a dude that's been calling him the future for nearly a year now. I still believe that, (belee dat) but I am wondering if a lot his momentum won't have stalled out since he'll have been gone for months.

Yeah, he's got that 'WWE Look™'.
Also, who he's related to doesn't hurt his cause.

Honestly I doubt that Reigns will be the sole "face of the company" like Cena is right now. I think him, Ambrose, and Rollins will all take turns. Reigns could win the title at WM31, and then Ambrose at WM32. Reigns transition between cool face and cocky heel, Rollins can transition between kid friendly face and douchey heel, and Ambrose can transition from Anti-hero and Psycho heel. I doubt that the next era will be like this one where Cena got most of the glory

If they let him be himself and stand apart from the last supposed face of the company then he might just make it.
If they try to square peg him into the Cena role then it'll work just as well as it did when they tried it on Sheamus.
