Anyone else find this weird considering the way he usually runs his guy into the ground, squeeze all mileage he can out of a guy?
sure it was the new generation, and he liked to mock WCW for their Old guys, but Considering the way he kept going back to Hogan, continuing to bleed Cena dry, and Bret's bitter rants after Montreal about working a horse to death and shooting the horse, and the old time wrestlers who worked themselves to death, that he of all people he chose Randy Savage to go "hey, you've done enough. Relax. Stop wrestling".

What I seem to recall (which could be completely wrong mind you) is that Vince wanted Randy to enter the actual business end of the company and didn't want him doing both. I don't know that Savage would have been his right hand man, but he would have been pretty close, likely in the same circle that guys like Kevin Dunn are in now. Savage however was a performer and wanted nothing to do with that at the time.
Looking back on it, Savage could have made A LOT more money if he just listened to Vince.

And yes for some reason Vince wanted new and fresh 20 years ago, but forgot this. Perhaps because of WCW kicking ass with old and stale.

I'm not so sure, there is no guarantee that he would have lasted until the Attitude era or that the WWF would have turned around with him at the helm. WCW drove a dumptruck full of money to the Macho Man's door and re-signed him for more while the company was at it's peak (if I remember correctly) so I'm sure he was hardly struggling for cash in his later years. |

Macho Man had plenty of money and was able to continue to do what he wanted to do for another 5-7 years, so good for him.

Randy's "de-push" began in 1993, as he took on more of the commentary role, but the New Generation push in '94 was what really cut Randy back. Ultimately Ransy felt he had more in him and wanted to be in the ring more, but Vince was pushing the young generation....
...which I always found interesting that the New Generation was headlined by a guy (Bret) who'd been with the company as long as Randy had.

I think Vince more valued Randy as a personality and a voice, feeling like Savage would benefit the company better by not being involved in main event angles. Vince's role for Savage was to put over storylines, interviewing talent, doing commentary, and just being Randy Savage the personality. If anything, Vince wouldn't want to ride a horse like Savage to it's death, as the potential for Savage getting hurt in the ring would endanger stuff like the Slim Jim Deals.
They wanted Savage to be that ambassador that WWE has been looking around for the past 20 years, but Savage still really wanted to mix it up with the up and comers. Eventually something just had to give.

What I don't get is that everyone thinks it was a really crappy plan to get rid of any of the older/established stars as part of some systematic culling of anything that wasn't 'new generation', which considered nothing but age and previous exposure yet whenever Heyman regularly suggests this same thing for other promotions everyone says "Wow, what a great idea!"
It may have been well-meaning but the New Generation just made an arbitrary decision to suddenly go in a different direction and everyone would love it because they'd all be young(ish), prettier and more athletic. But as Vince proved those attributes only mean so much. People also wanted to see characters they could engage with and Savage was one of those, which is why when he switched to WCW he made a lot of money.
If you can still draw you still draw. Age, height, skin colour, home state or previous occupation is irrelevant.

One thing with people saying Randy could have made a lot of money listening to Vince and transitioning to Va backstage role...you also have to consider his profession. He only has a reasonable period of time to do it at a high income level. Someone can work backstage for the rest of their life. Giving up the ring and moving back (which could have been something he ended up hating or being horrible at) too early cuts down his prime earning years. Maybe he just assumed he could keep wrestling and transition back on his own terms.

All I know I rather Savage wrestle than listen to his commentating. He didn't have the voice of commentating in my opinion.
