This might be in the wrong section, but . . . The internet gets behind certain workers and wants them pushed to the moon. For all the times we complain that the wrestling promotions are tone deaf, that Vince McMahon only likes musclebound supermen as his standard bearers, internet darlings have had plenty of chances at the top. How many times has the internet's favorite sensation gotten their federation's top spot and couldn't handle it through no fault of the company? I'll throw out a couple of examples:
Daniel Bryan - won two big matches at Wrestlemania and 2 months later he couldn't work a match Eddie Guerrero - won the WWE title at Wrestlemania and decided he couldn't handle the pressure, so he dropped the belt to JBL.

Eddie had been champion going into Wrestlemania, and he held the title for another 2 months afterwards...so I wouldn't look at it like he was a paper champion. JBL came around at the right time and despite being a less than stellar wrestler was a great heel. Guerrero was champion for 133 days, hardly dropping the ball.
Daniel Bryan needed to get neck surgery. It's a little too early to say the ball was dropped given if he returns and is still mega over.

Man, that Daniel Bryan is such a mammoth loser. I think about him in that hospital getting surgery and I'm just like, "WTH man?" No love for the biz.

Benoit...man, it hurts to think about it but I think most of us wanted him to be pushed better for most of his career.

Michael Elgin. People really were behind him to win the ROH belt, then he did and put on samey, boring matches over and over again.

I can see where you're coming from but I'm not entirely sure it's true. Benoit may have never turned down the intensity regardless of his position on the card.

That intensity was part of who he was. He worked hard because that's who he was, not because he was trying to impress some corporate guy.

Sin Cara. When people who knew of him heard Mistico was talking with the WWE, they were calling him the next Rey Misterio. Then.. Sin Cara flopped.

On the plus side we got Alberto kicking the shit out of him for being such a jerkass loser a bunch of times.

Putting aside Benoit, I think the poster child for this might be RVD. Guy finally gets THE push, has the ECW and WWE titles, and then gets filmed being arrested for drug charges. The facepalm I had when I heard the news defies description.
I was just happy Booker won the WHC three weeks later and actually made the most of it.

An almost contender, considering he never really had a top-flight run, more flirtation, but Shelton Benjamin went through that odd phase where his ringstyle got uber-clumsy the more IWC goodwill was directed toward him. I recall they even incorporated a botch into a minor-storyline at one stage.

I mean everyone knows he smokes pot, but to smoke pot and drive? That just shows you're an idiot.

I mean, if the guy is popular, in large part, because he cut promos about all the pot he smokes, then that's the type of person you can't be shocked if you make him the face of the company and he blows it for smoking pot.

I don't think it was just the pot smoking that WWE was mad about. It was smoking while driving. I mean you have to be smarter than that. Just like what people were saying when Swagger got busted for the same thing. You have to use your head when you're in that position and make the smart decision. Wait until you're home or in your hotel and light up.
