Watching Batman Forever, it seems that Tommy Lee Jones sanctioned his own buffoonery quite often.
I mean, he had a purple face.

A buffoon is exactly how he played Two-Face.

Watching Batman Forever, it seems that Tommy Lee Jones sanctioned his own buffoonery quite often. I mean, he had a purple face. And of the two of them, Jim Carrey easily gave the better performance in the film. Sure, there was plenty of buffoonery from him, but it was (relatively) in keeping with the character and was the whole reason Carrey was cast in the first place. Tommy Lee Jones was fresh off an Oscar win, was playing a character that had a lot of depth and gravitas too it... and took it in the one-dimensional "wah, look at me, I'm crrrrrrrazy!" direction.

To be fair that is probably the direction that his director told him to take it.

Before reading the thread title properly, I thought it said "Tommy Lee Really Disliked Jim Carrey". A much more interesting story, especially with the "I cannot sanction your buffoonery" line coming from Tommy Lee.

Schumacher apparently wanted a darker Two-Face performance than what we got, which led to battles between the two on set and both vowing to never work with each other again. Given how honest Schumacher's been about accepting the faults of the movies, I'm inclined to believe it was just a lazy performance from TLJ.

Its been so long since I watched any special features from the box set must have slipped my mind. Like so many others his inspiration was probably the 60s show.

Batman Forever didn't really need Two Face.
They should have focused on the Riddler and made obsession the theme of the film.
Then Batman and Robin could have featured Two Face and Robin's origin story.

I cannot sanction your buffoonery. I'm using that line. It'll come in handy at work. I already used it once. It got an alright reaction

Joel turned this franchise into a farce, no way will I believe that. Restraint was not what he wanted. If he wanted a good character out of Two-Face, he would have started the movie as Harvey Dent and turn him later on in the movie.

And he sucked in that movie. He could as well have been called "Dantes Grant".

If he wanted a good character out of Two-Face, he would have started the movie as Harvey Dent and turn him later on in the movie. It's often forgotten that Schumacher delivered exactly what was asked of him - a brighter, more kid-friendly Batman. Warner Bros. were so pleased with his work on the two films they were going to give him a third movie until the critical panning and resulting poor box office performance of Batman & Robin put an end to it. He's said he wanted to play on both the duality of Two-Face's personalities, as well as the contrast between the more intense Two-Face and more manic Riddler, both of which he claims were at least partially addressed in his original, darker cut of the movie (limited by TLJ's over-the-top performance). He's been unflinchingly critical about every single one of directing choices in the films, so it would seem strange that he would shift the blame for this one thing onto someone else.
