Inspired by the "applauding at the cinema" thread...
It really bugs me when passengers applaud once their plane has landed successfully!
I've been on buses that haven't crashed - no applause!
I've been on ferries that didn't sink - no applause!
I've even been on a train that arrived on time (once) - no applause!
What's so special about planes, huh?! Do people boo if the plane crashes?

We took a flight once that did make me understand this. It was a rough weather flight, 2 1/2 hours of feeling like we were locked in a washing machine. So yeah, we cheered that the flight was over.

Coming back from Geneva we had one of the scariest landings ever, plane was wobbling all over the place, one of the few occasions I thought "shit, I'm going to die"
Pilot got a huge ovation when we landed, deservedly so, I don't think I've ever been more happy to be back on the ground.
------------
On the other hand, a company like Ryanair that is so up its own arse that they play stupid celebratery music when they land and are expecting an applause.
Get lost.

I don't think I've been on a plane ride that lasted more then 2 hours in the last few years, but I've never seen anyone applaud when they landed.

I was on a bus on Monday that almost got rammed, and the bus driver was quick to get out of the way and saved everyone's life. That got an applause.

Depends on the destination. When you fly into Vegas everyone knows what's up and cheers. Now if you're flying into let's just say Detroit there's really no need for it.

I was on a flight to NY LGA that couldnt land due to the weather - we circled the city as people were freaking out , until the pilot announced we will at jfk instead - but that didnt happen as we continued to circle . The flight was diverted to Boston . We stayed on the ground in Boston for 90 mins , they were not serving drinks or food & wouldnt let anyone off . When we finally landed at lga - 3 hours later than intended , there was massive chearing , hooting & holering unlike anything i had seen before

I have never been on a plane where the passengers applauded upon landing.
I was on a flight last month where one of the flight attendants did some weird dancing, jumping thing during the preflight safety talk. Most of the passengers cheered for that. Personally, I found it annoying and stupid.

It's happened to be before while flying during shitty weather. The applause was kind of nice, as it reassured me that I wasn't the only one that was a bit freaked out at the time.

I've had a fair few flights that have been absolutely nightmarish due to weather, having to redirect/land at another airport, and then taking off into only slightly worse weather so they aren't a hugely late arriving, then having to land at an airport that had less terminals open due to heavy snow/wind and such... There's nothing quite like seeing staff on the craft holding onto seats and biting their lips with nerves/out of frustration (working longer hours as flight staff must suck) to know that they and the conclusion to the flight deserve a bit of tension relief. Heavy sighs and gentle applause puts you in a better mood coming off the flight than just leaving and grumbling to yourself about how crap the flight was. It's stress relief and a little thanks to the staff if they've been working hard trying not to stress out as well. Happens more often than you'd think. Coming back from Geneva we had one of the scariest landings ever, plane was wobbling all over the place, one of the few occasions I thought "shit, I'm going to die" Pilot got a huge ovation when we landed, deservedly so, I don't think I've ever been more happy to be back on the ground. ------------ On the other hand, a company like Ryanair that is so up its own arse that they play stupid celebratery music when they land and are expecting an applause. Yeah, I had a similar flight. After we landed, I was pleased that I had a sizable layover. During the wait the weather broke so the connecting flight was smooth.

Yeah, I'm gonna go the opposite route of how I feel about clapping in a theatre on this one.
"Way to do your job properly and not kill me"
That deserves an ovation.

Do you also give chefs in a restaurant an ovation for not giving you food poisoning? I like standing by road construction sites and clapping whenever they dump a load of asphalt into a pothole. "That is f***ing awesome guys. That is just...wow".Even though they're all Portugese I think they "get it"

Apparently, this is one of those things that are common in some cultures, but not others. A couple of years ago, I went on vacation to Russia for the first time, flying Aeroflot from Tokyo to Moscow (and then from Moscow to St. Petersburg). After my vacation, I had a friend ask me if the passengers all clapped when we touched down in Moscow. Surprised, I said no, and he explained that in Russia, it's pretty common to do that.
