I feel like Shelton Benjamin won the IC title his first go but I'm so likely wrong.

Austin also didn't win the Final Four match for the vacant WWF title after Shawn lost his smile, right?

Did Orton have a title match before he beat Benoit?

Seth Rollins will probably do this with the WWE WHC. Also has Edge ever had a WWE title match before his cash in? Also I believe that John Cena won the World Heavyweight title on his first try as did Batista

Did Orton have a title match before he beat Benoit? Yup. He came up short at Summerslam 2003 in the Chamber.

Gotta say Bret, with maybe both the IC and WWF titles. If he had previous attempts, it would likely be with Perfect on the house show loop, I'd guess and those don't count.

Also I believe that John Cena won the World Heavyweight title on his first try as did Batista He had one against Lesnar/Heyman at a British PPV, being the most immediate example. Here's one I'm relying on memory for, so the holes in it might become obvious to anyone more attentive than me: Extreme Rules 2011 was Christian's first legit crack at the World Heavyweight Championship. He competed in a match for the newly created Smackdown Championship in 2005, that was never actually for the WHC, despite Batista's immediate debut; the rest of his contention lies around MitB and No.1 contender matches He had competed for the WWE title before, of course. He also won the NWA WHC on his first go.

This was basically Carlito's gimmick for a while. He did it with both the IC and US titles. I feel like Shelton Benjamin won the IC title his first go but I'm so likely wrong. No, you're right. He was a rising midcard guy when he won the vote at Taboo Tuesday and got the nod to win the title.

Thought for sure he didn't get a title shot prior to Taboo Tuesday.

Not Cena or Orton. Cena lost to Lesnar at Backlash 2003 and Orton lost at Summerslam 2003. Drawing a blank on Kane, though...
