Which did you prefer him as?
I enjoyed him as a heel but look at the days of him as a face and think he was pretty over. I would say I like he equally but if I had to choose then maybe as a face.

I really liked him when he first turned heel. He should've been given a run with the title during that time. He was over as a heel, was great in the ring, and even gave decent promos as a heel too. I feel he should've been the one that either ended Nash's reign or Shawn's reign with the title.

Yeah and that match he had with Bret in late 95 were it was a bloodbath seemed so amazing to me back then as a kid.

Yeah and that match he had with Bret in late 95 were it was a bloodbath seemed so amazing to me back then as a kid. That was an amazing match. Just an all around intense affair that was very exciting and rare to see a bloodbath at that time in the WWE. But he definitely should've won the title during his heel run at some point. Now that I think about it, he should've won it at King of the Ring against Shawn. It would've been perfect in adding heat, as well as a reason to continue the feud, and despite the botch that Davey had it was still a great match.

He was always a face to me, except for that dumb period where he wore jeans and had dogs barking as his theme.

Face with longer hair, braided or unbraided. DBS was a strange case, he was kind of bland, but that worked for him as a WWF style babyface. When he was a heel he just looked lost, the stuff with Cornette and Shawn Michaels was just naff, he only really came close to working when he had the rest of the Hart Foundation around him and he wasn't fully heel.

His heeldom in '95 could be attributed to an outside influence (Diana, mainly); his Hart Foundation run in '97 he was just too nice to be truly heelish - there was the stretcher incident when the Foundation was wheeling an injured Bret to an ambulance (it turned out Austin was waiting for Bret); while Owen's screaming at the EMTs to be careful, Davey's all "Mind the cables on the floor, lads." He was a natural face.

I always considered him, and the rest of the Hart Foundation, to be faces during their anti-America storyline. And I always loved braids Bulldog, as a kid. So yeah, I prefer him as a baby face. I agree he always just seemed like a nice guy, a proper English lad who'd help old ladies across the street.
When he came back to wrestle in jeans, it was just a sad spectacle, watching him flounder around, get abused by The Rock and end up lying in a pile of dog shit. I hated that period of his career.

While I think heel Bulldog (mainly 1995 as people have said) was better than most people give him credit for, Bulldog was a natural face. "The British Bulldog" is one of those hero babyface characters you will always remember as a kid like Ultimate Warrior and The Undertaker and Hulk Hogan, hes just that memorable especially if your British. Had the Hart Foundation of 1997 angle not panned out he was sure fire going babyface again to feud with Owen, and I wonder where else he would have gone. Braids/Curly haired Bulldog was always my favourite though.
I wont even bring up the jeans/barking dog theme Bulldog.. WTF?

I wont even bring up the jeans/barking dog theme Bulldog.. WTF? About as subtle of a theme as those ravens "cawing" in Raven's WWE themes.

He looked so much shorter to me after the braided era.

Looking back at The British Bulldog, I would conclude that I thought he was at his best when he was a face.

Bulldog was a terrible heel and I'm saying this as one of his biggest fans. He never really ever seemed evil or even comfortable doing bad things. In the Bret bloodbath, what exactly did he even do that was BAD in that match? I think the cut was incidental booking wise and Bulldog never viciously worked it. When the ref was bumped I think he even kinda helped him up, haha. The feud with HBK was more about Diana being the heel and Bulldog believing her than him being a bad person. And tagging with Owen was more about Bulldog being a tweener/semi face and Owen being the cocky heel.
Of course during the Hart Foundation angle Bulldog was not full heel, as he was cheered wildly in Canada and Europe.

I guess I'm (almost) the only one who likes him better as a heel. And this is coming from a Brit.
I just think he's very bland as a face while I think he pulled off being a cocky heel well. Don't get me wrong, he definitely needed a mouthpiece but I thought the combination of Bulldog managed by Jim Cornette was very good.

His two main heel personas were 1996 when he was feuding with HBK. But he was still the Union Jack wearing British Bulldog, who was trying to win a title from a guy who came across to many as obnoxious. In the Hart Foundation, he was still waving a Union Jack, and supporting Bret, whose anti-Americanism wasn't entirely unjustified, especially to foreign fans.
So there was plenty in there to cheer for.
