One of those things that is so often overlooked in the nonstop turmoil of WCW's dying days. I've actually long had a curiosity about it; the general story is that during the last few months of WCW's life, Erich Bischoff had signed all the paperwork and believed he was on the verge of owning the company completely under the banner of Fusient Sports Media. He announced all kinds of plans, including an intent to push the cruiserweights enormously. So I've long assumed that the introduction of a cruiserweight tag title was simply part of Bischoff's plan. Even further, I seem to recall that the tournament to crown the first champions included a bunch of new high flyers, including a pre TNA AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels. What's more, I also think I remember the ultimate winners ended up not having any belts to hold on high upon their victory and actually had to wait a few weeks before they got them. And boy, when they unveiled those things it became no wonder why WWE didn't want to carry them over Anyone know if I am correct in my assumption? Was this part of Bischoff's master plan to relaunch WCW by bringing in a whole bunch of new cruiserweights and giving them a new title to compete for?

It was a good idea to help rebuild the division after the burial by Russo. Would've never worked in WWE.
If WCW had stuck around longer, this would've been good to have something for cruiserweights who weren't in the main title picture to feud over.
Going off topic, but I always felt that Thunder should've been a Cruiserweight show.

This was a very cool idea. Too bad WCW came up with the idea towards the very end and WWE never revived the division.

Cruiserweights and tag teams, two things Vince doesn't like. They never had a chance.

The Cruiserweight division after the Medusa/Oklahoma debacle was one of the few highlights of WCW. The 3 Count Jung Dragons feud is one of the rare hidden gems.
Rey still has his Cruiserweight Tag Title.

I'll always remember the WCW Cruiser Tag Tournament for introducing me to Air AJ Styles, really got behind him and Air Paris in those brief few weeks they were there

I don't get it. Why shove them into a division, a division that would easily and quickly die off? Why label them cruisers, why not just bring them in as new guys and let them build the entire roster? Just seems like Bischoff learned nothing from his previous run.

Just seems like Bischoff learned nothing from his previous run. I get where you're coming from, but personally I would have hated that. I am one of those weird people who doesn't want to see Rey McFlippio and his like in the ring against heavyweights. It's silly to me. That's not to say that there aren't some "cruisers" who can't break through into the heavyweight division, but just throwing them all together and abandoning any sense of logic so that somehow little 200 pound flippy guys can suddenly compete with 300 pounders sounds terrible.

Was Air Paris ECW's EZ Money? I seem to remember him in the tourney. EZ Money was Jason Jett, who was getting a push in the final month of WCW's existence. Air Paris was an indy guy who was making some buzz in a Georgia based fed called NWA Wildside, ironically through feuding with AJ Styles.

I actually had high hopes for this division at the time.
the end off 2000, just about the only part of the show worth watching was the 3 way Yung Dragons/3 Count/Knoble and Karagious feud, and with new teams like Air Paris/Styles, Kid Romeo and Elix Skipper, and using existing guys like Rey and Kidman they had some really good building blocks.
The cruiserweights were one of Bischoff's big successes, it made sense for him to expand on it when he came back. That and the reduced budget meaning no Hogan/Nash etc. were signs the relaunch might have actually worked.

I would rather they just put the cruiserweight teams in the regular tag division instead of separating them. At the time, WCW's regular tag division was in the dumps. Adding new teams would did more good than saying they aren't big enough to hang with the real men.

I remember loving Air Raid when they came in, mostly because they were so great in whatever the main booking sim before EW was.

Adding new teams would did more good than saying they aren't big enough to hang with the real men. Yeah, and then they would have been jobbed to Team Canada and whatever team Chuck Palumbo was on that week. The answer was more tag teams, not to merge divisions. The answer to the cruiserweight dilemma was to push cruiserweights. Place emphasis on the cruiserweight division and give them more to work with than "here are two hungry cruiserweights who want to be cruiserweight champion... ohwatamaneuver!"

I remember loving Air Raid when they came in, mostly because they were so great in whatever the main booking sim before EW was. Promotion Wars. And the data you played was data that I created and Air Raid was indeed awesome in it. Only so much you can do with a game that has exactly ONE rating encompassing talent... they were great flyers so... in that game's system, they were effectively as good as anyone in the business. One of the best ways to play the game was to find the talent that had high talent but low popularity so they'd be awesome but cost very little. They fit the bill. Incredibly simple game, but the one and only that beat Adam Ryland at his game. EWD, Promotion Wars' rival game made by Ryland, was very passé and behind the times. Then, Ryland started making games in Basic (instead of Pascal) and hired me and my team away from Adam Jennings and PW and we created EWR. In which the data that comes with the game is mine, also. Lots of you know me thru my work!
