Growing up, my brother and I save our paper route money for 3 months so we could buy a Genesis. After we finally had the money saved up, we were presented with a decision. Do we get the package that comes with Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 or do we go for the Streets of Rage 2 package. After much deliberation, we went with the Streets of Rage 2 package. This was 100% the correct decision.

The best of the 3 games. The first game was good but it felt like it could be better and the 3rd game felt like it was just trying to hard and just jump the shark at times (Robots really?) not to mention the sudden difficulty spike. Streets of Rage 2 felt like the prefect balance of the trilogy. Back then I was always given a hard time playing as Blaze because she was a girl but I could wreck with her.
Not to mention Streets of Rage 2 having possibly one of the best Genesis soundtracks of all time. Some of Yuzo Koshiro's best work.

I loved Max! I was very good with all the Streets of Rage 2 characters and don't really think one stands head and shoulders above the others, but I'm a sucker for giant muscle hulk like guys. I'm dumbfounded that they removed Max for stupid old man robot guy and never included Skate's brother for Streets of Rage 3. That game, IMO, was a total disappointment.

I still hate the 2nd boss in the first game, I could never figure out his pattern.

The thing about the soundtrack is that it's not only a good video game soundtrack, it's actually an awesome techno music album.
Put any of those tracks on at a club, and people will dance to it.

The soundtrack is all kinds of awesome: Stealthy Steps is particularly good (Boat level in SoR1)

I loved the first one & loved the 2nd even more! I need to go back & play the series through! Those green Blaze twins were a pain in the arse They are easy once you know the trick. There is a move with each character that causes you to do an attack behind you. Just keep doing that and the twins will be dead fast.

When you punch a boss if you count to 2 and hit punch again it never misses. I did this through the entire game and only got hit 3 times by non-flying bosses.

When faced with getting either a SNES or Genesis to succeed my aging NES, Streets of Rage 2 was one of the key titles that swayed me into selecting the Genesis.

Streets of Rage 2 had the superior music. I'm sad to see all the hate for Streets of Rage 3 though. I know the music wasn't so great, but I thought the game-play was pretty mush superior in every way in comparison to the other two. Everyone is a lot faster, you have special moves combined with weapons, you have tiered levels for your specials, you can use your special without sacrificing your health, you have four different endings, you have hidden characters, one of the hidden characters has an infinity combo that can destroy nigh everyone on screen the difficulty makes it challenging on repeated play-throughs. It took me a while to feel this way but I think SOR3 is a worthy successor to SOR2.

I still hate the 2nd boss in the first game, I could never figure out his pattern. I'm sure with that guy you could position yourself below him & he'd strike to the left or left of you every time but I wouldn't be surprised if I was thinking of another game here
