I think this is different than Fergusson and Michael Brown because while the Brown situation even if indicted probably would not get a guilty verdict, this is a case where a guilty verdict would have been easily obtainable. There is video evidence there showing the cop in question doing a maneuver that was against procedure and a kid died because of it. I do not know how this indictment did not happen. That's not entirely certain. First, it was not a kid. Eric Garner was a big, full grown adult (I think he was in his 40's), who was maybe even larger than Michael Brown was. He was definitely larger than the cop who killed him. The defense could argue that Garner resisted arrest and the cop grabbed on for dear life and just happened to grab him in a choking manner. Second, even when unnecessary violence is obvious and on film, cops in this country typically don't get convicted. It just does not happen. The footage of the teenager last September getting pistol whipped during a possession arrest? The officer got fired, but as far as I know no charges have been filed against him. The cops that shot an obviously wounded and disoriented car accident victim from this past summer? No charges filed. The cops that shot the black guy in Florida for getting something out of his own car? All that they got as far as I know was being put on administrative leave (at least he survived his shooting). Going back in the way-back machine, the cops that beat the ever-loving hell out of Rodney King? They were found not guilty on local charges (federal charges did stick, however).

Maybe....but even then, that's manslaughter. Federal charges I do see sticking on this one.

I'm just looking at my hands and just feeling shame. For some reason, perception has become justification to kill. Shame and fear for what is happening to the United States.

White officer pulls over black driver in South Carolina. Asks for driver's license. Driver complies. Officer opens fire - at a crowded gas station - and hit the driver. Officer was fired. As little as I trust cops, let's not act like all of them get away with it. Hey, my first example stated that the cop in question got fired. I just also pointed out that I had not heard that he got any charges against him.

This is so not the topic to start this #NotAllCops thing either. If that's directed at me, believe me, I would never start one. Even as a white male with a squeaky clean record, I have an extreme fear of cops. All it takes is one bad cop having a bad day and your life is ruined. I just wanted to point out that not all bad cops get away with it. What good does pointing that out now do? And if you actually had enough good cops, cops in general wouldn't be ****ing up like they are and have been since forever. If there were enough good cops we wouldn't be in the situation we're in now.

I would really like the good cops to be vigilant towards this stuff. Publicly trying to weed out this behavior, and the people who perpetuate it. Get the union angry, make it known that this pattern has to end.
I want to see people within the system trying to deconstruct and reform it.
As of right now, I don't see good cops and bad cops. I see bad cops and enablers.

If there were enough good cops we wouldn't be in the situation we're in now. It's a chicken and egg thing. Cops get more aggressive and violent, public gets more fearful. Fearful public starts to push back. Cops get more aggressive to counter the public lashing out at them. Rinse, lather, repeat. It's not a chicken or egg thing. The police force, as an institution, has always treated black people like shit. It's just now with all the cameras we have and the intertubes, we can share the fun with everyone.

At this point, I'm going to be perma-banned to hell and back if I type what I really think. So I'll just say this:
This is absolute bullshit and, as a country, it's time to take some sort of action against this garbage.

I guess I can see which friends of facebook are racists again While I think this was an incredible miscarriage of justice, you can't go around playing the racist card in these situations if you have any hope of changing their mind. Not knowing your situation, it may be worse than I imagine. But, after last week where I saw people yelling racist at anyone on Facebook who went with anything other than their chosen narrative, I hope people can deal with this in a manner other than name calling and dismissal.

I will say there is a reason this one is being probed by the Justice Department and not the Fergusson one.

Like I stated before I believe it's only going to allow certain cops and non-cops to get even more bold. What is truly happening in my opinion is that a message is being sent regarding young African-Americans. The message to me is saying they can brutalize and murder in an attempt to act like tough guys, and yet, when they're caught in the process, they won't be held accountable for their actions.
This is something that the George Zimmerman verdict created and I fear it's only going to get worse.

So if Chris Benoit was a cop, he would have done nothing wrong? That's all I'm saying. If Benoit was a cop and Nancy was black, yes.

I'm still on the fence on the Wilson case.
This one just pisses me off. He flat out choked out the dude on camera in an illegal choke hold. My giant white ass would be in jail already if I did that.
Apparently it's ok to kill tax evaders in America now. You dare get caught selling untaxed cigarettes...you better watch your ass! Go find some real crimes...f***.

Agreed, I'm appalled they'd kill a man over what amounts to minor tax evasion. Sadly in a lot of jurisdictions nonviolent crimes such as property crime have more stringent penalties that violent crimes including certain sex based offenses. Society has gotten badly f***ed up in recent decades.
