1.) Fights a complete nobody. Card includes plenty of young guys Dana wants to get people's eyes on with all the extra viewers. 2.) If Punk can get a win, he will fight someone way past his prime that would otherwise never be in a UFC octagon...but has some name value. The fight will seem a little more legit, but everyone else involved will hope Punk can win. 3.) IF punk can get a win again, he faces someone decent and more than likely calls it a career after he is undressed. This to a tee. For everybody who thinks Punk will get creamed right off the bat, you're in for a disappointment. He's a special attraction, so he's going to get protected like one for his first fight.

And that's why this is such a no-win situation for CM Punk. If he wins his first fight, it'll be immediately disregarded because he's going to be fighting a tomato can. If he loses, then this entire venture into UFC will turn out to be a massive joke. There's no upside for him, especially in the scenario you've laid out. He'll either be fighting the UFC equivalent of jobbers or past-their-prime special attractions and wins against that kind of competition will do nothing for him. And as you said in your third step, when he fights someone even halfway decent and gets his s*** wrecked, it'll be the end of "CM Punk: cage fighter" as we know it. Outside of making a few extra bucks, I cannot see how this is even remotely a good idea for CM Punk.

I honestly would have preferred to hear him to color commentary or something.

He can make money doing it - and if he is passionate about it in his own life - then by all means, go ahead and do whatever you like.

I'll be mildly surprised if his first opponent has any arms. Even then, it's likely too little for this. Maybe UFC is "the real sport", maybe the news of it would be more damning than anything else to the company. Doesn't matter. There is nothing in the world of sports I believe more than I believe the fact that CM Punk's first UFC fight is going to be a worked match to make sure Punk wins it.

If he wants to do it and if he's passionate about it, go for it. What am I saying is that I envision no way it doesn't end in embarrassment for him. Embarrassment for beating up tomato cans. Embarrassment for fighting over-the-hill fighters. Embarrassment for getting the f*** beaten out of him when he faces legitimate opponents. Like I said, from a pure competition standpoint, this is a no-win situation.

For UFC, it is money and easy money from both critics and fans who will watch this (and don't tell me they won't because that is a lie).

I see nothing but solid entertainment coming from this no matter how it goes down.
I applaud Punk.

For him, it's living the dream. It's not about money because as mentioned by others, he has some. For UFC, it is money and easy money from both critics and fans who will watch this (and don't tell me they won't because that is a lie). He gets to "live his dream" b/c of name recognition and nothing more. UFC is not an entry level MMA league, which is where he belongs. And do you honestly believe its not about money? Listen to his 2nd podcast with Colt and how he reacted when the WWE didn't meet his check demands or his merch check situation, or Wizard World. He cares about money. I don't think this is JUST about that by any stretch, but you can bet his offer is solid and he wants the payday just as much as "the dream". I'd not be surprised in the slightest if his UFC offer is worth more than a year or two of working for WWE. This is more potentially a no-win situation for Punk as others have said. He won't get any respect from fighters if he fights chumps. If he beats crappy fighters, its going to be questioned by everybody (espc MMA media who already are questioning it) who doesnt care or dislikes pro wrestling, if he gets destroyed what does it accomplish? That he lived his dream? Yea, great ending to that story. Dana White can't lose here. The first fight is going to be huge #s. If Punk has success, he has another huge name to promote fights with and keep the buy #s high. If Punk fails, he can write it off as him being an inexperienced pro wrestler and that could potentially effect future pro wrestlers who have legitimate MMA skills wanting to cross over the way some have. Punk has more on his shoulders than he realizes with this. I see nothing but solid entertainment coming from this no matter how it goes down. I applaud Punk. Yea, I totally agree with this despite my perceived misgivings. Its going to be interesting and fun to see it all unfold. Part of me wants to see Punk do extremely well, but another part of me wants to see him humbled. Either way I can see the entertainment.

The more I think about this, the more Team Punk I am about it. I admire him for doing it and I'm certain he will have thought this through. Feasibly he has more to lose if it goes badly than gain if it goes well. It's obviously something he wants to do while he still can so good for him. I hope it goes well for him. UFC may even get a first-time viewer (me) and even Brock didn't manage that.

If Punk and Dana have any sense they would make his matches a work.
I don't mean that as a dig at Punk. I mean that as a dig at MMA being more boring than watching paint dry, the only thing I like about it are the pre match promos, they've lifted that from wrestling so why not go all the way.
