Dana should just say..."Look at our PPV numbers, then look in a mirror. You want CM Punk out of here...but more PPVs."

In this picture, Punk looks like he said something racist and is apologizing for it "I have many black friends..."

That's so openly stupid I legitimately can't be mad at it.

In the end, he's going to draw a huge buyrate. Punk may not look good for the reasons why he got his chance, but there's still far more reasons for Dana to sign him than to not.

Oh there's totally an upside if you're looking at a single buyrate; it's just if you ever wanted to present yourself as a legitimate sports league, you've pretty well chucked all that out the window. It honestly makes UFC look worse than Punk in the scenario, in terms of being anything other than entertainment.
Really feels like once Dana realized UFC's mainstream appeal plateaued (due largely to their continual watering down of the product honestly), he decided 'the hell with it' and is solely going for the circus atmosphere he bashed for so long.

Dana White will hold a press conference describing UFC as a sort of blend between "sports" and "entertainment"

It's a simple cost/benefit analysis - do UFC have more to lose by signing Punk than they do by not signing him? Given the publicity already surrounding the deal they'll almost certainly have more eyes on the product than they've had in years, so all they need to do is stack the card and hope that a large enough percentage of the audience Punk brings in stick around.

The most enjoyment I've gotten so far out of all of this is Ariel Helwani on his podcast getting SUPER touchy about it because of his friendship with Punk.
He has this stock 'He's not taking anyone's spot!" rant when no one on the podcast mentioned spots at all.

Yeah, I get all that like I said. I'm not convinced there'll be any long term benefits though. Probably not, but I don't see MMA remaining as popular as it has long term anyway. It's had it's boom period, and now like wrestling it's going to be reliant on stunts like this to pop a few extra buys.

I mean, it's not like Dana can really pretend that Punk fighting in UFC isn't for publicity. Punk himself has said that he has no fighting experience and he announced the deal a week after his podcast. I won't say that the fight itself doesn't matter, but it's a pretty blatant cash grab.

That's going to piss off UFC fans. And the second he faces a legit fighter he's going to get dropped, and well Punk's fans that came to UFC to watch him will bail, because given his injuries he'll call it a career.

But in an industry where 99% of the 'journalists' covering the sport are awful at what they do, Ariel really isn't that bad.

And this tweet is now ironic as rumor has it that Punk will be training with Roufusport in Milwaukee, where Askren is the head wrestling coach. He'll also be training with Anthony Pettis. Not a bad choice if true.
