I don't think its very likely, but the situation reads like some bizarre Sasha Baron Cohen stunt.

Frankly I doubt this is anything other than empty threats (from North Korea? NNNAAAHHH?!!), I just don't see whoever is behind this having the resources to pull off such attacks (what, are we supposed to believe they hid bombs in every theatre in the US that's scheduled to play the movie?) but the fact that some people think this is a rational course of action is just really sad.
Honestly I wouldn't be shocked if turned out this doesn't even have anything to do with North Korea but it's just an ex-employee pissed off that they got fired and showing exactly why they deserved to be fired. Who the hell warns of a terrorist attack in advance? That's the kind of stuff you see in movies, real terrorists don't work like that.

Even if there were communications on some encrypted network and you had operatives sworn to secrecy, even the idea of carrying out a terrorist attack on just half of the movie theaters we have in the US is insane.

It's kind of absurd that this film gets all the terror threats, while Team America, made 10 years ago, didn't harbor similar feelings. And that film had Americans blowing up North Koreans, who were the villains of the film.

I have a terrible feeling that these hackers forcing a political agenda are in fact going to bring back debate on net neutrality. I was never worried about it during the last debates on the issue, because of the logistics. But hacks followed by 9/11 style threats are a much different monster than stolen music and candid nude celebrities.
Also, I never had an interest in this movie at all. It was very likely that I would wait years to see it, if ever. And now I am worried that I won't have the chance to catch it.

My main gripe about all this is why the hell are news outlets reporting on whats in the leaks?! Its wrong and immoral, its like handling stolen goods.

Honestly, after the Dark Knight Rises shooting, I can't fault theaters from pulling the movie.

It looks as if Sony has to hope for a Annie Christmas miracle now.

I am absolutely not criticizing Sony for cancelling the scheduled release. It's their decision and it was based on valid concerns. However, with their decision, those making the threats have essentially won. They didn't want the movie released, and while Sony has not said it will not release the movie, they did concede and cancel the planned release. The hackers/threat-makers have a victory here.
