I was just thinking about this a few minutes ago: Ain't it a shame that Lita's "slut" run sorta began to override everything she'd done prior? I mean you look back to what could be considered her heyday and she was a helluva wrestler--athletic, gorgeous, and over as hell. I mean the moves she would bust out were great, and something you almost never saw women in WWE do. The moonsaults, the hurricanranas, etc were great and on par with any guy's versions of same. Hell, her DDT is legitimately my favorite version of that move.
She really was a great talent, and again, was over like rover not just for a female wrestler, but as a wrestler in general.
Hell, one of the most brutal in kayfabe things you'll ever see is the Two Man Power Trip teeing off on her with those chairs.
Then the whole Matt/Edge thing happened and the backlash began. Credit to 'em for taking the ball and running with it as far as reactions go and changing her character to work with the bile from the audience; but it really feels like it came at the price of how great a talent that she was. Don't get me wrong, she played the character well, and I'm pervy nuff to admit that I'll always be a fan of THAT shirt (there's some double-sided tape that was working overtime) but it's almost as if the slut character completely eclipsed just how great she really was.

The Hardy/Edge thing killed her career IMO. Although what happened was awful and everyone had their own fault, the stupid fans had no right to hassle Lita for her personal life. It got to the point that when she walked her dog, fans would harass her. Worse when WWE decided they could make it into an angle which probably made it a hell lot more awkward for everyone. No surprise that she was originally gonna retire in 2005.

WWE for making the whole thing into an angle (firing Matt didn't help), dirtsheets for reporting about it, and the fans for taking shit too seriously and harassing her about it. I don't think Matt deserves too much blame considering he was involved too and was understandably upset, but making public comments about it wasn't smart.

I don't blame WWE for turning it into an angle, because that's one of the few times they actually listened to fan response.
However, the Cryme Tyme segment where she left and they humiliated her out the door was absolutely deplorable, especially in how it contrasts with how they let Trish walk out of a few months earlier with dignity and respect.
Thankfully, the nostalgia bug has restored her legacy as most people remember her career beforehand.

I disagree completely. I think the best thing she did in her entire WWE career was her run as a total bitch with Edge. Her role was already going down the toilet with that Kane angle, and then they paired her with Edge and she was suddenly one of the most over heels on the entire roster. She got so much heat, and she added so much to Edge. He could not have been the Rated R Superstar without her.

I remember being really uncomfortable during the Cryme Tyme skank sale (or whatever it was called) they did at Survivor Series. It was that much worse considering that was her last night as a full time wrestler in the company.

It's ironic that it did absolute wonders for Edge's career, while pretty much destroying what little Lita have.
Talk about the double standards that society puts in place. "Lita is a slut and she's terrible for it." "Edge is a sleaze and he's kinda cool for it."

Lita (especially pre neck injury) was an amazing worker and she did things in the ring that most divas just didn't do

My question...what happens to Edge if he never has the affair?

My question...what happens to Edge if he never has the affair? I'd say he still gets the push, but who knows for sure. WWE was always gungho about Edge, but his return in 2004 absolutely SUCKED. He was known as GarbEdge around here for a for a reason. Even after he won MITB, he still was directionless and lacking a lot even though he wasn't as bad as before. Without that sleazy quality, I honestly see Edge getting a Miz run with the belt. Him being injury prone didn't help matters and I think the company would have given up on him by 2007 if he didn't develop that character.

Pre 05 we were on EZ Board. It was rife with viruses and whatnot.
On topic, yeah the Kane story was dumb as hell too and she was directionless; but I was honestly kinda lumping that in the beginning of that whole time period.

I never really understood why Kane was used as a substitute for Matt Hardy in that situation. Wasn't Lita already paired with Kane when it broke that she left Matt for Edge? I honestly don't remember the timing of it all, but it was probably just coincidence and Vince just ran with it.

Then the whole Edge/Lita thing happened while Matt was in his recovery phase.

IIRC the'yd already done the Snitsky kills Lita's baby, which made Kane a face for some reason. You know, despite the fact he'd basically forced himself on her in order to achieve the pregnancy. So they stayed as a couple until the story broke out sometime in early-mid 2005. They might have been married on screen at some point too, I don't really remember. All in all it was completely f***ed up.

Huh, I didn't even remember that Kane and Matt were feuding, but yeah that's what happened. That whole Kane/Matt/Edge/Snitsky/Trish/Lita angle is honestly one of my favorite things ever, because it was one of the final examples of long-term continuity in WWE, lasting the whole way into the "La Familia" era, where Edge shows up in ECW, someone (I think Kane?) insulted Lita, and he shouted "I WAS GOING TO SPEND THE REST OF MY LIFE WITH THAT WOMAN!!!" Plus, it led to one of my all time favorite lines from Kane : "You forget, I sent Matt Hardy to the depths of hell."

Yes, which makes it worse in kayfabe (Kane rapes Lita, forces her to have his baby, forces her to marry him- and then when she cheated on him and left him for Edge, SHE'S the evil one) than it was out of kayfabe. Other than that, there are two differing things as well- what the fans did to Lita was vile and had only went further. Beyond the details of what happened, the angle itself is still important, because it's the base for everything that we know and love in the modern era of professional wrestling. The Lita/Edge/Matt Hardy storyline also needs to be seen as the first, conclusive case where the IWC, on their own merits, had gotten big enough and powerful enough to be responsible for forcing the WWE to change direction and run with a different storyline plan (for better or worse). While it's clear the results of this one were terrible, it is the foundation for everything that has crested since the "Reality Era" began in the WWE.

Meh she shagged Edge when she was in a relationship with Matt, it's hard to sympathise with her after that.

Wasn't it revealed that Matt had cheated on Lita before she hooked up with Edge? I do remember Cena was the first one who threw it out there by saying during an interview that there was more to the story.
