They really seem to go out of their way to humiliate female performers, portraying them as fat, sluts or crazy or refusing to give them a fair shot to show that they're actually fairly good at the whole wrestling thing, unless they're someone who they signed purely for their looks who's become passable after hundreds of matches like Trish, McCool or the Bellas.
Lita did nothing that the majority of the male roster haven't done, but she took one for the team and got Edge over at the expense of her own dignity and her reward was being painted as trash on her way out the door. She really did deserve better.

I'd say that everyone aside from Lita and Edge deserve blame for killing Lita's career. WWE for making the whole thing into an angle (firing Matt didn't help), dirtsheets for reporting about it, and the fans for taking shit too seriously and harassing her about it. I don't think Matt deserves too much blame considering he was involved too and was understandably upset, but making public comments about it wasn't smart. Wasn't it revealed that Matt had cheated on Lita before she hooked up with Edge? I do remember Cena was the first one who threw it out there by saying during an interview that there was more to the story. I forget all the details but Matt was not totally the victim he was originally portrayed and even Hurricane (one of his best friends) didn't really go to bat for him.

I know once he heard the whole story Jeff said that he couldn't really defend Matt for any other reason that he was his brother. I know both he and Hurricane have also said that after hearing everybody's story, Matt should have kept his mouth shut.

My question...what happens to Edge if he never has the affair? I imagine that he wouldn't have had the run that he did. Also, we wouldn't have gotten my favorite Edge promo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbpbHL0Ean0

Lita's first WWE appearance was as one of The Godfather's hoes and she was first known for taking her shirt off when doing moonsaults

(Like Jericho did in his defense over the garbage truck angle) She still got better than Molly and Mickie did, and that was just for not having "the look."

Hang on. Since when did this kill Lita's career? She was still hanging with main eventers, like she was in her 2000/2001 prime, was super-over and was at least partially responsible for Edge's main-event career. She left when she was still one of the top stars in all of WWE. All it showed is that she was a huge star as both a heel and a face.
I'm glad WWE are now starting to give her the respect she deserves
Edit: I'd love somebody to bring up on TV that Triple H and Stephanie's relationship is the result of an affair, too.

I disagree completely. I think the best thing she did in her entire WWE career was her run as a total bitch with Edge. Her role was already going down the toilet with that Kane angle, and then they paired her with Edge and she was suddenly one of the most over heels on the entire roster. She got so much heat, and she added so much to Edge. He could not have been the Rated R Superstar without her. This. It completely re-invigorated her career. I do agree that the ho sale at Survivor Series after her retirement match was a bit much but it hasn't affected her legacy. She's still one of the most over, most respected and most recognisable female wrestlers WWE has ever had.

Lita transcends all the skank/slut/ho bullshit. No one will remember that when they consider her legacy. They'll only remember her unique style, look and popularity. She was a perfect model of how to book a female wrestler. The Edge/Kane/Matt shit was muddled because so many different things had to be rebooked and accomodated. Edge had to be the villain, even though he was really too awesome to boo, Lita had to become a villain, even though Matt came across more like an overly obsessive douche (I laughed when he said Lita had ended his chances of having children), Kane and Matt had to be booked as sympathetic, despite the fact that Matt as I just said, seemed like a stalkerish nutter, and Kane was basically a rapist.

I had a theory that some of this had to do with Matt's ex-girlfriend Lori. I haven't watched Matt's shoot interview, but I have read about it, and I wouldn't doubt if the Lori thing had something to do with it. Seriously, if you saw what she looked like, could you blame Lita for feeling threatened? {Spoiler}{Spoiler}

As far as the timeline, when Matt came back he basically did a worked shoot that established the entire Kane thing as Kayfabe, saying they were together at that time and it was during that time that she apparently cheated. Admittedly, I didn't know that Matt wasn't entirely blameless in that as I really only joined the IWC about a year ago. At the time that Lita retired there was a lot of terrible vitriol and hate being thrown at her.
If her retirement promo had any truth to it (I suspect it did), the kayfabe disgust fans felt for her melted into her real life. There was no getting away from it and it was overshadowing her in ring accomplishments. Now we're separated from it by several years and her true legacy is the one that is standing the test of time. However, back then it had been shattered and left on the ground.
Personally, I feel that cheating on someone is one of the worst things you could do to someone but I wouldn't wish the genuine hate she received from that on her. Even if Matt was blameless which apparently he isn't.

If the WWE applied the same standards of morality to their male roster as they do with female performers like Lita and Vickie, they would have very few male faces. John Cena? Mickie James says hey. Undertaker? Multiple ex wives and a love of strippers. Randy Orton? As loyal to his wife as he was the marines. Batista? A ha ha. Ric Flair? I'm starting to think I'm one of the few people he hasn't had an affair with. Hulk Hogan? We all know what a mess his personal life is these days... And so on.
