Do you need an actor to give every interview in character for you to be able to get into their movies? Who said anything about movies? I remember when wrestlers did interviews in character. It was special. It helped to buy into the story itself. Nowadays, they are just actors that happen to wrestle. It's just not something most people care about in the year 2014.

You're right.
Wrestling sucks in 2014.

And I'm supposed to hate this guy? That's what I don't get about wrestling these days. If they can't do interviews in character, how else are they going to suspend disbelief? Kayfabe has been dead since the mid to late 80s (it's just people knew back then, but suspended their disbelief a bit more and smarkiness was a bit more niche though more widespread at the time than people think), wrestlers still do add in kayfabe comments in interviews, especially when promoting house shows on local newspaper websites.

It's just not something most people care about in the year 2014. I miss the romance of keeping kayfabe alive, but when the jig is up to such an overwhelming extent, wrestling is only going to look dumber by continuing to uphold the charade. Regardless of the death of kayfabe, it still seems to be the assumption of the general non-fan that there's still some sort of cover-up and that anyone who watches must be stupid enough to fall for it. The last thing the business needs is wrestlers walking round trying to pass these absurd caricatures as their real personality and these contrived storylines as the truth.

Remaining in kayfabe outside of the show is considered hokey. Imagine any other performance art where the performer goes out for an interview and remains that way. When guys would show up on Arsenio Hall, they were usually laughed at. Arsenio was a good sport and played along, but most of the time he was winking at the camera.
I suppose wrestling could remain in it's own bubble the way it is, but if you ever want it to get slightly more respect, it's gotta maintain it's aura in it's own backyard. Having John Cena or CM Punk or whoever show up on a talk show and just be themselves is the best means of displaying that wrestling is just like every other performance art. Cutting a promo on an opponent on the Morning Show is going to get laughs, not buys.
