When the Powers of Pain joined Mr. Fuji after Demolition turned on him they got a face pop until Demolition came out and chased them off.

Wrestlemania 18 - Hogan vs Rock. They did not expect Hogan to be cheered that big. To this day I don't believe this. They can't seriously have thought Hogan would be booed there? And against Rock? Either that or they're dumber than I thought. This was supposedly why Steve Austin wouldn't take the match as he knew Hogan would turn the crowd around.

I'd say the Rumble match from 2014 is probably a strong contender.

Fans booed Muhammad Hassan for speaking out against the blind discrimination that muslims experienced in the wake of 9/11. No, they were supposed to be heels. Their first appearance had them interrupting Mick Foley talking about Tribute to the Troops. And then they started interrupting other people's segments to the point where Muhammad Hassan's interruptions actually became a meme because of how their music was so apt for interrupting things. (Anyone remember YTMND? They were all over it at one point.) They were heels because they were so obnoxious with how they were spreading their message, not because of the message.

Notice how like 90% of the referenced examples are from WWE/WWF? They seem to have a bit of a problem...

Look at CM Punk and the SES. Straight edge lifestyle? Great idea. The message being spread by a self-righteous dickhead with a messiah complex? Not so much.

Goldberg heel turn.
They had him beat old Jim Duggan bloody on Nitro. Fans were like "Ehh, Hacksaw shouldn't have been in the ring in the first place."

Favorite will always be the Cena/Orton staredowns in the Rumble a few years ago. The production and the announcers were building the staredown up as a big confrontation and the crowd didn't react at all... so they tried doing it again later in the match... still no reaction.

That's an interesting point; I don't remember Hassan interrupting anyone too often (Maybe because I was too focused on WHAT he said, and how ill received his comments were by the audience). Your point about Hassan being a heel for interrupting things mirrors the implications of Bret Hart coming out and interrupting the European title match between Owen Hart and The British Bulldog; what Hart said made a lot of sense (The the promoter and the fans encouraged the Hart family's members to fight with one another and break apart their familial ties), but he could be viewed as a heel (especially to Americans, whom he later singled out as being responsible for said inter-family strife) for having interrupted a very important match.

Remember when they paired Angle up with Daivari and had him cut promos about not liking black people and wanting to make Jesus tap, and they still cheered for him over Cena?

That's pretty weak, though. Austin's music would interrupt things and he'd run out and beat people up for no reason and he didn't get booed. The dude was evil because he was a Muslim, and everything else was just stuff they threw in to try to get away with it. Cheering JR and King saying "Love it or leave it!" is terrible no matter tha context, and chanting "USA" at a character who was himself American is even worse. So... the fans reacted exactly how they were supposed to react; it was just all terrible.

Did anyone think the NWO would get just as or more over than pretty much everyone on WCW except Sting?
Also, crowd cheering Sid over Goldberg at Mayhem 1999
I think the moral of the story is don't put anyone against Sid.

Daniel Bryan v. Sheamus at WrestleMania. WWE's booking went completely against what the live crowd wanted. There were a sea of 'YES!' signs. Fans were cheering for Bryan's entrance. Sheamus beats him in 18 seconds. Crowd chants bullshit and chants 'Daniel Bryan!' during other matches. WWE's booking took the crowd out of the show until Undertaker and Triple H's match.

Notice how like 90% of the referenced examples are from WWE/WWF? They seem to have a bit of a problem... I think it's because WWE has always pushed things on the audience a lot more than other companies. That includes not only face/heel turns but gimmicks and pushes. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. Vince's philosophy seems to be that if you push a terrible idea long enough that people will just start liking it. In contrast, WCW seemed less creatively restrictive because their investment was in the talent itself, not so much in home cooked gimmicks or storylines. That's why guys had more freedom to come out and work their own stuff to get over in WCW. If a gimmick or a push seemed to be failing, it was nothing for them to just drop it and repackage the guy or just job him. There needs to be a balance.

Steamboat/Flair during the part of their decades-long off-and-on feud where they had Steamboat carting out his wife and toddler to the ring. He was doing the upstanding, white hat hero bit while Flair was still surrounded by floozies, and the crowds turned on him, siding with the partying Flair instead.
