My friend does online dating. She only went on one date so far, and it was with some 40 year old dude that had a fake picture, and lied about his age.
It was scary.
Try one of the ones that you have to pay for, those capability tests might actually work out for you. Guys have a reputation of using the free ones to just get laid. So I think that scares girls off for the most part.
.. Oh this makes me so happy that I'm married. The dating world gives me anxiety.

Girls receive so many messages that you have to really differentiate yourself from everyone else. The "hey, what's up?" messages will get ignored, most likely. However, the messages that are specific and show that you've read her profile and want to get to know her based on common interests may have more of a chance of getting responded to.

I get so many "hi" variation messages and I don't even open them. I also don't respond to anyone that refers to me as pretty, beautiful, cute, or anything of the like. I don't care. Also, don't send out the message to every person. It's obvious when something is copy and pasted. Just keep the messages you send out somewhat short and include something from her profile in it. Questions are always good too. I didn't awkwardly fill that thing out just for it to be ignored.
Here's another example of something not to do:
That's just a little much for a first message. Thinly veiled Cena hatred is at least third message material.

This isn't the question you asked, but have you been online dating exclusively for all these years? And if so, why?

I've been with the same person for 3 years now and I met her on a dating site. But before that I was on dating sites for years. I either got completely ignored or ended up meeting girls and it never going anywhere. In my personal experience it sadly comes down to nothing but looks. I would for the most part, write girls messages that showed that I had read their profile and was interested in conversation and still nothing. I've even had girls tell me in replies that we had nothing in common despite her profile saying otherwise. A lot of times it comes down to shallowness sadly.

I've never used online dating before and I really don't like the idea of it.
Obviously, you're unsatisfied with it right now, so perhaps, now is the time to try another method.
I don't think there's a better method than meeting in person and you can try to get your friends to help.
My long-term GF and I met in school. My best friend met his wife through work. I'm actually going to a wedding tonight and the bride and groom met through a mutual friend.
I'm sure you've heard that "when you stop looking, that's when you meet somebody," but I don't think you have to stop looking. If you put yourself in social situations, you're going to meet people. I think that's the key.

Being a short male doesn't seem to help much.

Being a short male doesn't seem to help much. I'm cursed with being just under 5'8". I'm pretty sure I've missed out on potential dates in social situations just due to the availability of guys 6' or taller in said social situations.

If a woman cares enough about that, she shouldn't be somebody you'd want to be with anyway

I'm taking a break from online dating. It's no better if you're female. The first was a dud. The second I dated for almost a year, and then he spent a whole date explaining that I wasn't rich enough for him to not worry about me stealing his money (I had two jobs at the time) and then dropped off the face of the earth. The third (hand to God) was a cousin of Bas Rutten. It was awesomely awful. I learned two things from all this- nothing beats meeting a person with similar interests on accident, and changing your profile picture frequently gets more messages. A couple hints for you; you may not be the most flattering looking person, but you can still present yourself looking your best. Don't use the first picture you take by yourself on your phone while you wear what you did for work. Wear something nice, clean yourself up, and have someone take a ton of pictures of you (preferably outside). Also, don't be that dude with pictures of hanging out with an ex. And most importantly, don't act like an ass. Make compliments outside of looks, talk about interests in TV or books, talk about your dreams (especially your professional ones- ambition is attractive).

It's all luck. Just create a decent opening email and c&p it to as many women as possible. Hopefully a few will respond.

Most of my pictures of selfies but I wouldn't say obvious selfies, maybe that could be one of the reasons. I sometimes see hot women on there with pictures of them in bikinis, whether they are selfies or seen at pools or beaches. I don't try with them mostly, but I just go and save their pictures. Those women aren't usually my type, so I don't try with them. However, I have had my moments of experimenting by sending about five to 10 women messages to see if I get at least one reply. Okay, whoa. What the f*** dude? That's creepy as hell, just going on to steal pics to put in your spank bank? That's messed up man. Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I've been on Tinder for a few days. Joined it to support a friend who's just come out of a relationship and wasn't sure about signing up for it, so everyone in my house did. Decided I'd be really picky about it, not had any matches so far, but I've been real casual about it, like, go on it on occasion, say no to a bunch, yes to one and leave it for a day or so. It seems to be a woman's game though. Said housemate is also being extremely picky, and has had 40 matches. By comparison, everyone else in the house combined has had 2, and one of them was an accident.

Being a short male doesn't seem to help much. I'm a short male here (taller then Jericho and AJ Styles lol) and I had success and one of my best relationships was with a 5'11 woman. It doesn't make it easier and it means you have to highlight your other advantages but you can't get discouraged. As a shorter male I refuse to hear martyr'd short male excuses.

I honestly thought most online dating sites made it impossible to save pics unless you screengrab them to prevent fakes and pics being used in porn click bait advertisements.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I don't really think online dating is your thing if you're just saving pictures of women in bikinis. I mean, there's easier (and to be frank, less creepy) ways of getting your fix if that's your thing.
