Over here in St. Louis on the public rapid transit system the ticket machine gives out Susan B. Anthonys instead of bills.
Imagine my frustration when that first happened to me.

Our vending machine at the hospital has done this for the entire 5 and a half years I've worked here. For the first few months I was convinces it was funny money and that I had to be quick to spend it in case my job ended.

I always have a weird fear that somehow other places won't recognize the Sacagawea dollars as real cash. "No, it's money I swear!" Same here. That's why I pretty much only use those coins for other vending machines.

With any luck the morally ambiguous guy in a suit flipping a coin over and over trend will be making a big comeback. I'd be offended about the morally ambiguous thing if you weren't pretty well correct. So,yeah here's hoping. Haha.

When I buy tickets for the LIRR they do that. I had the same situation I only had a twenty bought my ticket and than had a large amount of change in return Long ago I put in a$20 bill to buy a $2.50 metro card not realizing I would get back coin dollars , the damn machine only gave back $7.50 - nyc transit still owes me $10

sometimes when I go on trips, I stop by the bank and get 2-3 rolls of dollar coins and a handful of 2 dollar bills to leave as tips.

There's a local manufacturing business here that gives out holiday bonuses in rolls of dollar coins. These bonuses range from $250-1000$ dollars. The idea is that local businesses see these dollars being spent locally. As an outside observer I tend to see these coins in lots of tip jars and donation cans.
It's been enjoyable so far. I've seen more than one waitress/bartender bitch about being left a tip in laundry tokens. I'm amazed at the amount of people that don't know dollar coins exist.

It's not like they are all that common, or really advertised that they exist.

I've never seen a vending machine that gives you change in bills. Me either.
