I get that booking a full militant New Nation revival would be problematic considering the political climate right now, but what made WWE think that New Day was a better idea?
When these guys came together, Xavier came out and said that they should stop playing around, get serious, and get what they felt they deserved. There was nothing wrong with that, hell they could've just filled the spot of "serious babyface trio" that the Shield had.
I mean look at this:
That was exactly how New Day should've been booked, a no nonsense trio that worked like a well-oiled machine to get the W. But no, smiley positive choir group that "loves having fun, John!" was what Vince wanted to go with. Sigh.
I know people are going to go "oh who cares, it's just a couple of mid-carders anyway", but I cared. I cared and I had hopes and excitement for them, and then all of those hopes got crapped on. Crapped on and then wiped off with Big E's prayer cloth.

I think the problem with the New Nation is it was around the same time as the whole Ferguson mess. So they didn't want a group of black guys running around as heels at the time. Hence why they got cold feet on it so quickly.

WWE *hates* having gimmicks that are in any way relevant to modern audiences.

The New Nation deal, like, I thought Woods cut a great promo, and he really showed a serious side that he never showed before. Another issue was it came out around the Del Rio issues and the whole idea of WWE being racist. So because of that, they were like, we have to do something different. And in that, I and others feel the current gimmick is even more racist. I think someone here posted about his issues about it and gave it the name the "happy dancing negro". They're just there to dance and entertain people. It reminds me of when Triple H was doing the racist gimmick and wanting Booker T to dance for him.
I think it shows really the problem with WWE and I think a good contrast is with TNA, Lashley, MVP and Kenny King, who people originally did jokes on the New Nation, but nothing about their gimmick is a stereotype in anyway, and they were just all wrestlers looking to get power and stay on top in TNA. TNA had a ton of problems this year, but that group wasn't one of them. MVP was in the Xavier Woods role as the talker, talking up Bobby Lashley, and I loved those vignettes of Lashley training and MVP putting him over like crazy. Kofi Kingston has never been a heel before, but maybe he could be the obnoxious babyface like Kenny King. And of course, Big E and Lashley being the big comparison of two monsters who just wreck people. If they liked the group together, they should have just made them heel and simply stole the TNA gimmick, because WWE coming up with a gimmick for a black guy is gonna end up being accidentally racist because it's WWE.

The funny thing is, The New Day is actually a really good representation for Vince's views on his product. What better way to push his insane motto of "We have fun" than to have an actual group where each member is "having fun"?

Have them as heels but not black supremacists? I really think Kofi could do so well as a delusional Kurt Angle-style role model heel.
As for them filling the spot that the babyface Shield had? I don't see it. All three members of The Shield seemed (to me) from day one, three guys WWE had big plans for. The only member of New Day that I've ever thought WWE had any intentions of pushing was Big E, so I can't really see New Day in a Shield role.

WWE *hates* having gimmicks that are in any way relevant to modern audiences. That's why they're always 5+ years behind. No balls, man. That's the *real* reason for Zack Ryder's de-push. Even though he was doing a Jersey Shore gimmick BEFORE Jersey Shore, Vince THOUGHT he was being topical and crushed him like a bug. References to current events and pop-culture is what MADE the WWF in the 80's. Then you listen to Vince McMahon talk for five minutes and realize that the inspiration for Wrestlemania was BEATLEmania. The Beatles, of course, were that ultra-popular rock group...that had broken up roughly a decade prior.

Having them as just three no-nonsense guys would be great(look how dapper Kofi looks in that suit, Jesus), but going the route of making them heels for the reasons of "We're black and we're angry" would probably lead to nothing but a questionable apology on WWE.com after a white babyface does a whole promo making black jokes at them.

Now I just want them to have a Hooper X gimmick.
"For years in this industry, whenever an African American character, babyface or heel, was introduced - usually by white bookers and writers - they got slapped with racist names that singled them out as negroes. Now, in our team, The New Day, we don't have none of that bullshit. We're descendants from the black tribe that established the first society on the planet, while all you European motherf***ers were still hiding in caves and shit, all terrified of the sun. We're strong role models that a young black member of the WWE Universe can look up to. 'Cause I'm here to tell you, the chickens is coming home to roost, y'all. The black man's no longer gonna play the minstrel in the medium of sports entertainment. We keepin' it real, and we gonna get respect by any means necessary."
