Just saw Supersweet made a passing mention of history textbooks and thought this might be a fun topic. Can't rememeber if we had a topic like this any time or any time recently.
My 8th grade one had a photo of Flavor Flav in it. It was because he had been at some event with Nelson Mandella who is also in the photo.

Oddly that time we blew up the Earth, and came over to the new planet in the giant space-arc wasn't mentioned in my history book...

My history books from the late '80s/early '90s called the civil rights movement "a recent development we're dealing with but will probably straighten out quickly." ......because history books are often old due to our education system stinking......

I remember a History text book that had an image of someone being beheaded, like the picture was taken a split-second after the decapitation. IIRC It was from some attempted revolution in a south East Asian country (can't remember exactly which one though).

In like 4th grade we had this history book that many years out of date, did it's best to "kiddify" everything AND written by some hack company that had an obvious agenda.
I really can't repeat any of the examples from that book here because they are too horrible/political.
More or less, it seemed like any social issue in the USA was caused by people that were ungrateful. Classy eh?

In high school there was an out of date legal aspects textbook or legal dictionary I saw that defined rape as "non-consensual sex outside of marriage". I understand there was a time when this was standard legal practice, but seeing it in black and white mentioned in the present tense is unnerving.
I saw on the back page of a library book on hate groups published in 1995 on hate groups a listing of other books published by the same company includes a revised and updated version of their book about AIDS and I immediately began to imagine what they wrote in the previous edition that they had to revise and update when you consider the epic levels of ignorance about AIDS in the 80's.
