This is really interesting, you seen the wwf's early version of the Hulkster here (Gene still calls him "The Incredible Hulk Hogan" which was no longer used by the time he beat Sheik for the strap) he also spoke in a faster, more frantic style. The WWF would later have him slow down his rants so he just sounded goofy, rather than goofy on speed.
Also notice his shirt said
Hulk
A
Mania
and of course it would evolve into one word...Hulkamania (though I could swear I saw it as hulkamania in the AWA as well at least a few times)

Also notice who's behind the curtain for a second when Backlund goes to the back (freeze it at 1:06) it's Gorilla Monsoon. Even for a split second i'd recognize those thick glasses anywhere
And while Hogan is wearing his signature colors here, he would experiment with many others (white, blue) up until 1986

www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ym7l0RAxEo(Remember, don't embed WWE-owned footage from a non-official site~Tyger)This was his real actual comeback match in the WWF, took on Bill Dixon 31 years ago today Notice no shirt tear before the match (doesn't even wear a shirt to the ring) also uses the axe bomber in between the big boot and leg drop

The year I was born, it looks sooooo old and dated. I can't believe Backlund was champion that long so unbelievably boring

In another universe somewhere we got a really good Hogan/Backlund feud where the latter snapped and turned heel out of resentment for the fans preferring the blond cartoon bodybuilder over the clean cut All American athlete. Ah well.

That was the plan though right? Even him dying his hair black? Just so we are aware who the heel was if it wasn't clear..

Ah well. I don't think Backlund could ever pull off snapping and turning heel.

*Hogan rips shirt off* "It just...it just turns me on brother!" What a line to begin your run!

Deranged Bob Backlund vs Hulk Hogan should've been the co-Main Event of Wrestlemania IX with Randy Savage vs Bret Hart.

I didn't notice that Samula did the Cactus Jack "head trapped in the ropes" spot until watching just now.

Deranged Bob Backlund vs Hulk Hogan should've been the co-Main Event of Wrestlemania IX with Randy Savage vs Bret Hart. Backlund snaps after Hogan makes a Suprise return in the Rumble and eliminates him. Backlund does what Hogan did to Sid the year before pulls him out and locks him in the chicken wing.. 10 years after Hogan helped him out.. But to be fair as a casual fan that would be lost on me as I had no f***ing clue of Backlunds significance when he returned in 93 he was just this boring geeky looking guy in plain trunks

Safe to say the wwf fans saw his AWA run Doubtful. AWA didn't go national on ESPN for another year or so. They were probably aware of them from the magazines, though, but keep in mind Hogan had just been one of the top heels there a couple of years prior and had also just been in one of the biggest movies of the year.

I mean everybody had entrance music by 1993!

I didn't notice that Samula did the Cactus Jack "head trapped in the ropes" spot until watching just now. And it just happens in the background with no one commenting on it at all. Although it looks like they just had a hard camera to film the matches, so it's not like they could really get a close up of it. Also, I never knew there was a third Wild Samoan in addition to Afa and Sika.

You know what I took from this?
I miss every wrestler in the world using "daddy" like it were a period.

Also, I never knew there was a third Wild Samoan in addition to Afa and Sika. Samula was brought in while Sika recovered from an injury. They did 6-man's for a while, Afa and Sika bolted and Samula was turned babyface. He had an infamous bit on Piper's Pit challenging Piper after Piper had assaulted Snuka, with the WWF referring to him as the Tonga Kid (even though the interview itself clearly has him being referred to as Samula). Samula eventually became Samu of the Samoan Swat Team and Headshrinkers.

But then when managed by Afa as half of The Headshrinkers it's very much them being mentored by Afa in a paternal role (appropriate since isn't Afa his dad?).
