To me, it's like saying "here's kinda money that is only spendable at exactly one location that may or may not be convenient for you." They're fine if you're an established mark for whatever place it is or it's something practical like a gas card, but for whatever reason I was stricken with multiple cards this year that don't quite fit.
For instance, we've a $20 Dominoes card. Taken alone, that's fine. Dominoes' is okay. We all like pizza. Thing is, the nearest one is like four towns away from here. Half of that value is negated by the amount of fuel needed to get there and back.
Up next, we've a $25 Best Buy card. Not the strangest thing ever. I'm a game dork. I like electronics. Again though, there's not a location anywhere near here. I can use the thing online, but then I have to eat shipping costs and they're not even willing to ship all of the things they offer, so I'm really not free to choose as I see fit.
Lastly, we've a $15 Subway card. Miraculously, we do actually have one of these around here. Thing is, I'm really not a big sub guy.
I don't mean to come off as ungrateful, I super appreciate the fact anybody would be compelled to do anything at all for me, but it's just that it feels like these things were all snapped off the card rack at the last minute without any real thought and that kinda bugs me I guess.
Somehow these cards have gotten over as this thing that is more intimate than a simple money gift, but they're not. They're just complicated money. Some people are just hard wired to think everything Christmas has to be some kind of gimmick.

I think it's strange when people pick particular stores or restaurants for gift cards. The only gift cards I'd ever give are Amazon, which are open to pretty much anything for anybody

I love gift cards, especially Amazon gift cards.
That way I can just buy what I want, because a lot of stuff I'm into I would never admit to most people.

I love gift cards for places I like, because that means I HAVE to buy something I want, for me. So I'm always in favour of an Amazon gift card because then I gotta buy a CD or a DVD or something I'll love.
Give me some cash and most likely it'll disappear on groceries, or in the old days it would've gone on a pack of cigarettes or something. Bills gotta get paid.

I don't mind. Sometimes gift cards give me reason to try stores or restaurants I've never been to before. And say what you will about the lack of effort. Just be glad someone even thought enough of you to give you anything at all.

One thing I hate about gift cards is when buy something right under the value of the card and get left with like 37 cents on the bastard which is all but useless. At least with cash you can throw that change in a change jar or something.

I love gift cards, but I understand where the OP is coming from. I'm thankful that my brother has a car and he doesn't mind taking me places. Otherwise I would be in the same position the OP is in.

I always buy gift cards for my aunt, since she's a scrooge and rarely leaves the house for more then a hour to do the exact same thing every day, she usually ends up just giving me the card back a month or two later and i end up using it.

I'm guessing they don't live in your area, and don't know that they're not around you. As for the Subway card, there's no rule against you using it on chips/soda/cookies. I did good on the gift card front this year. I got an iTunes card which I'll definitely use, and a Visa gift card. But now I have to figure out what to spend the Visa card on. I feel like Gizzark would, I might just use it on something practical like lunch for a few days.

They physically know where I live. They've seen this town. We've all hung out around here on numerous occasions. You'd think the fact they've never run across a Dominoes should've registered as they moved in on the card. They're not THAT old. As to your Subway point, you're absolutely right. I should just treat myself to a big cookie here and there.

Na I like them, the more iTunes gift card's the better for me. Clothes shop gift cards I like as well because I'm usually not happy to spend money on clothes if I don't need them.

Subway are literally everywhere.
in the city I used to live I could walk out the door of one and see another at the other end of the street (as long as it wasn't foggy), then walk 5 minutes in the opposite direction and there was another.
so basically from the first subway to the third whilst passing the second one was like a 7 minute walk.

Just give me cash.
Or better yet, nothing at all. Very few times do I actually get joy out of any gifts.

I miss the days when you could get cash back from a gift certificate.

I give a holiday card with real money instead of gift cards for the reasons mentioned in this thread.

Unless you really have some ideas, everybody just kind of goes through the motions. It's sick if you pick up on some throwaway comment of somebodies' during the year and pin something mushy on them though. Sparkling your Mom/Grandmother/Girlfriend/Best Friend/Kid/whoever is pretty spiffy.

Sorry about your situation. If you have no use for your gift cards, I will gladly take them off your hands. There's a Dominos just down the street.

At least with cash you can throw that change in a change jar or something. Yeah, that's a pain but I imagine it's part of what makes them good business. You buy a card for 25 bucks, the person who is gifted it shops at a place and checks it out and might be a return customer, with the added bonus that they either buy less than 25 bucks worth of stuff and the shop makes the profit there (the cards can't cost much to make in bulk), or they buy more than that. Sweet deal.

Just give me cash. Or better yet, nothing at all. Very few times do I actually get joy out of any gifts. I know it's cheesy but for me the most affecting gifts are the ones that have meaning. My friend bought me the John Cena Funko pop vinyl figure for Christmas. She knows absolutely nothing about wrestling but recognised the WWE logo and knows I'm a wrestling fan. I'm not a Cena fan but it means a lot to me because she bought it trying to please me. It means more to me than £100 worth of stuff from her. And I'm generally pretty heartless...
