I had heard bad things about that promo. Just now catching up on Raw and saw it. I thought he did a great job! Crowd wasn't all that into it, but I respect him saying all that in front of everyone, and for wwe for letting him go out there and say it. We don't get much legit personal stuff from the performers anymore.

Cut a 'life story' promo if it helps but it seemed to be "I have this scar and once got cut from the show...so Rusev I'm coming after you." - e.g not much relation to the promo and the feud. It just seemed really out of place. To me it seemed like, "This is what drives me, and this is why you can't stop me." Like it seemed to tell the story that Rusev would just be one more of the many obstacles he overcame, especially since he downplayed the nationalistic angle, so it worked fine for me.

I was pretty sucked into that promo. His delivery was the main reason, at first it seemed like he was going to retire or something because there was a lot of emotion to it in a subtle, realistic way. Ryback's always been this soulless killing machine, so hearing him open up like that was really interesting.
The timing of it was strange, there was no real reason in-story for him to cut that promo, but it did accomplish the goals of giving his character more depth and taking the focus off of the Russia/USA aspect of his program with Rusev. In fact, the weird timing made me like it more, because it was so unexpected and broke the Raw formula
