Now, serious question: has this been done in comics before? I mean, dubbing a character over in reprints? I know Toyfare did it when they compiled their Twisted Toyfare Theatres and had to get rid of the DC characters. Yes and no. There have been times, but I can't think of any that happened for the same reason. I think a lot of older Spawn stuff had the Tony Twist character replaced or outright removed after the real Twist sued McFarlane. The current non-Marvel reprints of old Marvel Transformers comics have to either leave the issues featuring Circuit-Breaker out completely or she's represented by an outline/blank space when they're included. There was a situation with Kevin Maguire's STRIKEBACK! years ago where the Savage Dragon made a cameo, but by the time the book was released, the cameo had been redrawn into a new Savage Finster parody cameo. When the book went to Image years later and they reprinted it, Dragon was back where he was supposed to be.

But they still have to ask for Steven Richards' approval to begin using his likeness though, right?

I hope they don't change the art at all, but they change all mentions of him in the dialogue to "Special Delivery Jones."

I can assume that they didn't even touch the Spider-Man issue at all. If memory serves, all they include of that issue is the cover with Spider-Man and his name blanked out, and a one-page summary of what goes on (with Spider-Man either never being mentioned or given some "costumed super-hero" description).

If they replace him with Hardcore Holly, several FAN members will experience extensive brain trauma. I'd mark out.

By all rights, they need to replace him in the comics with CP Munk.

Who's gonna replace Punk in the retcon? That Masked Man from SmackDown vs. Raw 2009? he's going to re-appear as either a singificantly younger, significantly gayer version of himself or an ambiguously brown tweenager without superpowers promo skills.

Extremely petty WWE will pay royalties to replace Punk with Jesse Ventura.

Titan Books over here in the UK were able to acquire the rights to reprint the g1 comics, Marvel owned characters and all, for very little money back when Transformers was in a lull after the failure of Beast Machines. There hadn't been a widely published Transformers comic since the early 90s at that point, Titan and Dreamwave proved the market was still there so Marvel now want more for the rights to use certain characters than IDW believe that they're worth.

They no longer have rights to put him in the comic. They are no longer putting him in the comic. End of story.

I doubt this is even in the top 1000 of the weirdest comic book retcons of all time.
