TNA has a tendency to rush titles onto people for no rhyme or reason. Magnus is a great example as is Eric Young. Sabin falls into this category.
Sabin is a good worker and is likable enough. With the right push and hype he could have had a decent 1-2 month title run but he basically returned from injury, got beaten up and fluked a win. How am I meant to get behind this guy and support him when he's an undeserving guy (kayfabe wise) who got lucky?

I think he's better off where he is right now to be honest. I'm still waiting for a MCMG reunion on the indies, to no avail. I wonder why they haven't? They've both been on the same show numerous times. My assumption is that Shelley is too busy (and making too much money) as part of the Time Splitters in Japan right now to really consider a Motor City Machine Guns reunion as worth it. I know, but they've been on multiple shows together in the US lately. Like AIW could have easily booked the MCMGs against Youthanazia (Cross/Prohibition) at their Black Friday/Hell on Earth show. Instead we were given Cross vs Gargano, Sabin vs Eric Ryan & Shelley vs Prohibition. It ended up being great, but if they're just throwing together matches (they had to due to EC3's injury) they could give me some MCMG closure dammit. I bring it up because it's almost at the "elephant in the room" levels to me. These guys have been on WAY too many shows together to not have had a 1 on 1 match and/or reunited the MCMGs for a night. There's no doubt in my mind that a promoter would have thought of it. The fact that it hasn't happened makes me think there's more to it.

I think something may have happened between the two of them, I remember an interview Shelley did a year back and he said he hadn't talked to Sabin in a couple of months.

Yeah. Sabin was pretty poorly used as a World Champ.
If they built him up as a fast, technically sound guy who was just too quick and skilled for Bully Ray - that would have worked better. They should have given him a submission or something that was really devastating. I dunno.
But they did nothing to make him seem the least bit interesting or make you want to root for him. Which sucks because he's got a long history with the company and the fans were ready for it. If he were booked half-competentely it would have worked.

If he were booked half-competentely it would have worked. That would fit for the majority of TNA...

I know it's not technically on topic, but the whole MCMG thing is really nagging me. Should I make it it's own thread or does anyone know the actual story?

Why is the referee crying? Was he that upset Sabin was World champion?

Him mistreating Velvet and looking like a fool was the best solo work he had in TNA. Zod that storyline was so horrible. Sabin was the emotionally and verbally abusive boyfriend, which can work when you put good writing around that, TNA didn't do that. Aries was the one coming to Velvet's aide, because she was hot and that's what she needed to be, nevermind that this is the same guy who stuck his crotch in Christy Hemme's face. Velvet threatens and breaks up with Sabin, not because he's an emotionally and verbally abusive boyfriend, but because he lost a wrestling match. TNA made the perfect storyline to make us hate all 3 characters. I also just realized that Bully Ray is currently dating his former real life girlfriend. So while Sabin may have beat him for a world title, Bully Ray defeated him at life.

I would've preferred Alex Shelley.
But that would have never happened. Even when I watched TNA regularly back in '05-'07...I never understood why they didn't do more with him.

Chris Sabin looks like Dean Ambrose's cousin from the South that he's always getting into fights with.

I wished they never gave Sabin the title if he was just going to be a modern day Ron Garvin/Tommy Rich/Lex Luger. Him winning the title just prove that TNA was ripping off the Sting vs the NWO angle.

I liked Sabin as champ and I liked the heel gimmick he had afterwards. I hated Velvet.

In only know Lex Luger of these and I distinctly remember how I marked out when he beat the bald bastard for the title and how pissed I was when he lost it the next PPV. After that WCW went downhill big time.

Of the two, Alex was the more complete wrestler. TNA had someone who could work just about every wrestling style except hardcore, who could talk, and had charisma & ring presence. So what do they do? Keep him in the X Division with the rest of the undersized skilled workers while pushing Crimson and Gunner because they look like "WWE wrestlers".

Even at that, I can remember a long stretch there where TNA was leaving Shelley off the show entirely in favor of hard pushing guys like Jesse Sorenson. TNA just makes shitty decisions all around.

I was at the show where Bully beat him for the title, the poor guy got absolutely no reaction at all.
