It was the promotion that made him a star in the US and it was obvious early on that WWF wasn't going to give him a significant push after HBK & Taker feuds. Especially with Kane around. WCW could've easily afforded to bring him back in 97 or 98. He could've joined the fight against the nWo or feuded with Goldberg. Did he burn bridges? Did Vince promise him something? Did he just feel like going back to Japan? Anyone know the scoop?

Did you see what WCW did to him BEFORE he went to the WWF?

Did you see what WCW did to him BEFORE he went to the WWF? No. I wasn't watching. Are you referring to the Hogan squashes? I've only seen one of their matches and it was excellent. Hogan was getting the crap kicked out of him and took a lot of big moves. Flair interfered at the end.

If I had to venture a guess, it would have to be the fact that Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff was still working at WCW as a trainer at the time and seeing as how Vader got fired from WCW by getting into a fight with Orndorff in the first place, the chances of Vader getting rehired there were slim to none.
Besides Vader made it out alright going to Japan and getting a monster gaijin push.

It wasn't just the Hogan matches...
The way I remember it (and its been almost 20 years, so forgive me for not remembering specifics), the way they booked him after Hogan came in just killed his mystique.
I'd have to find old videos to firm that argument up (or possibly shoot it to hell with a fresh review of things), and right now, I can't do that.

He was smart not to go to WCW. They would never give a push to a guy that came from the WWF.

By the time Vader left the WWE in what was it late 98, WCW was over flat on the roster and likely be lost in the shuffle instead of a ME. Vader best would likely been Bam Bam push to face Goldberg which would been awesome but then lost in the shuffle.
Vader went to Japan was was champion and MEing. So Vader I think did the smart thing. Go to Japan get paid well and was used as a Main Eventer.

Vader was booked like a "monster heel of the month" against Hogan, but WCW was building him back up by putting him over Arn and Flair in a handicap match. I think had Vader stayed in WCW, he might have been better off in the long run. Vince did nothing to restore his credibility as a monster. I'm just glad it was 1997 instead of 2007, or we might have seen Vader and Sid in a comedy tag team.

www.wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2014/0925/581395/vader-talks-saving-sid-vicious-life/index-3.shtmlAccording to this interview from last year, he took issue that Bischoff was going to suspend him without pay after the Orndorff incident. He was told just go to Japan and felt because he put off shoulder surgery because Bischoff asked him to keep working with Hogan on vacation that he deserved better than that. He left for Japan. I'm not sure WCW would've given him a fat contract. WWF didn't see any value in him anymore at the end so he wouldn't move the dial in the ratings which they were obsessed with. They might have lowballed him or something he considered lowball since he could make more going back to Japan. If he did, he might have been made a big deal for like a month and then end up wrestling Terry Funk in garbage hardcore matches before being sent home and doing nothing.

Vader in ECW against Taz could have been cool.

Where would he have fitted in the main event scene of a company where the only people allowed to be heels toward the top of the card were the NWO? You think what Hogan did to Heel Vader was bad, imagine what needing a steel cage, crooked ref, international object and Arn Anderson to beat a guy who's meant to be the heel would do to Vader's remaining credibility.

Well he made the right choice of going back to Japan because like someone else said if he went back to WCW be would of been jobbed out to Goldberg and then lost somewhere in midcard hell.

Would he have done well in WCW mid-2000 when Johnny Ace took over?

Vader in ECW against Taz could have been cool. Yes, except they probably would have insisted Taz squash him in 90 seconds.

Did you see how Vader was booked in the WWF? They killed him off way worse than WCW did.
